Designer Interview of Antonia Skaraki:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

AS : Absolutely yes! Art is a form of communication, and being a designer is my way to communicate.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

AS : Allow me to describe it in English words that have Greek roots: Dynamic works characterized by talent, fantasy and energy. The protagonist: every project.

DI: What is "design" for you?

AS : To bring fresh and innovative ideas to life. To communicate visual sensations. To craft great experiences.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

AS : Anything that stimulates the senses. I strongly believe that multi-sensory design considers not just the shape of things but how things shape us… our behavior, our emotions, our inner truth. Our senses are powerful forces, and when more than one sense is stimulated at a time, there are wildly creative applications.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

AS : The universe. The extreme fine-tuning of so many laws of nature that leads to the greatest design of all. The cosmos; anything having order is, for the ancient Greeks, a cosmos!

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

AS : Myself! Well, in a figurative sense, of course! But this is the first thing that I had to do when I created my first design & communication company, Karamella.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

AS : I don’t have a specific favorite. Every little thing has its own beauty! We should always choose the best tool that can help us reach our strategic goals.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

AS : I feel most creative first thing in the morning, seeing the first sunrays. After all, cutting-edge research shows that exposure to nature and access to daylight can spark creativity!

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

AS : Fresh ideas and innovation. And of course, strategic analysis.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

AS : I feel like a teenager. Design is the way you think; the way you explore, discover and create.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

AS : Joy and pride.

DI: What makes a design successful?

AS : Strategy. It is not enough to create something beautiful. You have to create something useful, perpetual and enduring.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

AS : The strategy. And of course, the concept. Most of the well-known designs globally are famous because of their concepts. Many have failed just because of the opposite.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

AS : The idea that designing carries social and ethical responsibilities is not new. Designing is creating. And with creation comes responsibility. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to ignore the global challenges set before us.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

AS : We need to prepare for the changing nature of the industry. We need designers who can push the limits of design and keep a constant focus on innovation. Designers have always worked at the intersection of cultural trends. But today these cultural trends are being accelerated by advances in technology! Of course, we should also take into account the perpetual need for harmony.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

AS : My last exhibition was in the “Good Design Greece”, an exhibition held in my homeland, Greece, fueling thoughts about art and exploring the prospects of design philosophy.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

AS : My inspirations come from many sources, from life’s experiences. You know, most designers, when lacking ideas, turn to galleries to find new perspectives. But there is a major problem with that approach; when taking inspiration from similar mediums, there’s a fine line between “inspired by” and “copied”.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

AS : I love my country’s history and heritage. And I often get inspired by it. In a similar way, I always focus on other cultural references and current global trends when I’m asked to work on international projects.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

AS : Greece is a cornucopia. A symbol of abundance. The place where the notion of philosophy was born. So, yes, of course the cultural heritage of my country affects my designs, the way in which I understand the world, the way in which I feel the world!

DI: How do you work with companies?

AS : I work with people who share the same ideas and values with me. And I always want to gather inquisitive people around me.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

AS : Fit the brief to the correct designer. And keep inspiring your designers’ team! Inspiration is always the first key-step.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

AS : Brief (see and notice) – Brainstorming (think and co-exist) – Creations (express your inner needs).

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

AS : My Poaa Dumbbells by Philippe Starck – almost like a sculpture! A ‘le Petit Prince’ doll. A Pear sculpture, a symbol for fertility with a modern, surrealist twist. A Supreme skateboard. And a spiral, a symbol for evolution, life and creation.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

AS : Creative!

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

AS : Passion. And never stop learning!

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

AS : Dream big. Think big. That’s what you do when you are a good designer.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

AS : Exceed your expectations.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

AS : Creativity and curiosity. Analysis. The insatiable desire to create through design.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

AS : I always choose tools to fit the brief.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

AS : Time management is often the biggest challenge. I always try to follow the work flow with consistency, and double-check the needs of each project.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

AS : Every project is special, and the needs and time frameworks for each work are different. But what is important (and what you can define) is the moment; the moment of inspiration, the moment when you find the right concept.

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

AS : Can you analyze this?

DI: What was your most important job experience?

AS : Every single day offers a different experience; that’s the mafic of this profession!

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

AS : Branding. Design is about seeing opportunities, about making intelligent, strategic decisions.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

AS : To ‘be present’ for as long as possible.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

AS : In every aspect of a business, the diverse skills of teams are needed for reaching success. The importance of teamwork cannot be stressed enough! The French language has an excellent expression to describe it: esprit de corps. This means a sense of unity, of enthusiasm for common interests and responsibilities.

DI: How can people contact you?
