We, as the Designer Interviews ("DI") had the distinct pleasure and opportunity to interview award-winning, most creative and innovative DesignNest ("DesignNest").

Allocacoc, an industrial design firm, stands for setting a different standard. One of our top selling products is the PowerCube: An award-winning product in multiple categories, amongst which the coveted Red Dot Award for Industrial Design. We are also helping other designers to develop their ideas into products and launch them into the market through our crowdfunding platform called DesignNest. DesignNest is a crowdfunding platform that offers designers a unique opportunity to develop their ideas into finished products that are launched onto shelves worldwide. In contrast to traditional crowdfunding platforms, DesignNest provides a complete solution and support for designers from sourcing, production and assembly, as well as distribution and sales. Designers experience the entire process while having the chance to collaborate with other designers in an open environment. There are already two successful projects with products that are on their way to stores worldwide, namely DAX: ‘the wallet with a trick up its sleeve’, and Levit8: ‘the flat folding portable standing desk’.

Designer Interview of DesignNest:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

DesignNest : I have always wanted to be a designer! I spent six year gaining industrial design experience at Dong Hua University, graduating in 2016 with a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering. There are various problems encountered in people's daily life, and a lot of problems can be and should be solved. Solving problems is the goal for us as designers.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

DesignNest : Allocacoc was founded in 2010 by Arthur Limpens and Yixia Jiang, two Industrial Design graduates from Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. Allocacoc stands for setting a different standard. They are also helping other designers develop their ideas into products to be sold in the market through our crowdfunding platform called DesignNest. This is a one-of-a-kind crowdfunding platform that provides design knowledge, sourcing, production, and assembly together with distribution and sales.

DI: What is "design" for you?

DesignNest : Pooling resources and solving problems in an appropriate way.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

DesignNest : Simple products that people often use in their daily lives, which will improve their lifestyle.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

DesignNest : MUJI Wall-mounted CD machine. It is a kind of metaphor in an interactive and visual perspective, which makes people feel that music flows like the wind.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

DesignNest : LightCube

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

DesignNest : Wood/Pinterest/Physics!

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

DesignNest : When I encounter a problem that needs to be solved!

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

DesignNest : I ask myself, what problems can this design solve?

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

DesignNest : Excited, happy, driven

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

DesignNest : Happiness! The fact that my product can bring convenience and fun to more people.

DI: What makes a design successful?

DesignNest : When the design can solve problems effectively

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

DesignNest : Can it solve the problem effectively?

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

DesignNest : I believe that industrial designers have the mission to solve a variety of problems, to help people have a better life, a better environment and even a better world. Making a better product is a one of the best ways to solve the problems associated with people daily lives, and I enjoy it very much.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

DesignNest : More personalized and diversified design forms

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

DesignNest : Hongkong Lighting Fair ,Spring 2017. HongKong ,CN. I would want to hold my next exhibition anywhere if my product received an invitation.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

DesignNest : I am very sensitive to the various problems encountered in people's daily life, and I feel that a lot of problems can be solved. I want to solve those problems in the way designers do.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

DesignNest : In fact, this is my first mass production product, I am willing to use “concise” and “practical” to describe it.
