Designer Interview of Ragù Communication:

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

RC : We are Ragù Communication, a creative communication agency based in Rome. We operate in an international context but we work like a small boutique that models the creative idea in a personalized way; we oversee internally every step of our projects with great passion and sartorial care.

DI: What is "design" for you?

RC : For us design is the way to give added value to every project; it’s a distinctive part of our strategic approach which allows us to bring out the best in all our customers.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

RC : We love to create new visual languages, designing tailor-made identities for the brands that turn to us.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

RC : We love to construct brand identity through all-round communication strategies. We are very proud, for example, of our recent project to rebrand Lega Serie A with a new modern and international visual language.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

RC : Ragù Communication’s first project was completed for Istituto Luce – Cinecittà. It was a multimedia project to enhance the contents of the Luce Historical Archive. It was presented at Cannes 2012 and was described as a magnificent combination of technological innovation, memory and cinema.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

RC : . The best creative ideas of Ragù Communication often come during conversations in social contexts. Creativity is in our DNA: bringing it out is a group activity.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

RC : Every aspect of the project is followed personally by us and receives the same level of attention until obtaining a final product that is of high quality from all points of view.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

RC : The design phase is a stimulating and inspirational part of the work: for us it means having infinite possibilities and giving free reign to our creativity; for our customer it means being involved in this process towards choosing the best direction to take, so that our project speaks the true language of the brand

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

RC : Completing a project is a source of great satisfaction and a thrilling moment; it means finally being able to see and touch what we have imagined, designed and dreamed.

DI: What makes a design successful?

RC : Creativity is certainly the driver for everything, but it’s not enough on its own. Ragù Communication’s production team models the creative idea with craft, personally following every single phase of the process with professionalism, with the passion and attention to every detail for which we are renowned.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

RC : For the future, design will have to become increasingly dynamic and flexible and be able to exploit the infinite possibilities opened up by technological progress.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

RC : The current general context offers the possibility of being inspired by various forms of creativity in a global perspective. We strongly believe in constructive exchange with different contexts; it’s no coincidence that we often organise foreign training experiences for our team to foster continuous shared growth.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

RC : Our style is a fusion of technical skills and different inspirations: This is seen in the history Ragù Communication, the history of each one of us.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

RC : Ragù Communication is based in Rome. Italian creativity is recognised throughout the world, but in the field in which we operate, it needs to be adapted to a wider perspective. The real challenge is to manage to combine Italian taste with the needs of customers that operate in a global context.

DI: How do you work with companies?

RC : We have always worked in a climate of trust and proactivity, and we take a personal approach with every company: we involve them in the choices so that every creative project and communication strategy reflects their true identity.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

RC : They should certainly experiment but, at the same time, look around, let themselves be inspired by different contexts and styles. Always be open to comparison and sharing.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

RC : We use the basic tools for every designer: Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. We believe that extraordinary projects can be generated even with the simplest tools if you have sensitivity, a spirit of research, determination and passion for your work.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

RC : The time necessary to propose a complete, original and high-quality project, always respecting the requirements and timeframes of our customer, often responding in real time to every possible request.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

RC : Our work has always been the result of cooperative and synergic design, and this represents one of our real points of strength.

DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

RC : At present we are involved in a stimulating project with Lega Serie A, dealing with its rebranding and the evolution of a new, more modern and international visual language. Another piece of work that we’re very proud of is the new Activity Report 2019 for Europ Assistance: it’s a marvel of design with a style studied down to the smallest detail, with which we are bringing out the very essence of the brand.

DI: How can people contact you?

RC : you can find us online, on Linkedin, Instagram, Vimeo, or feel free to drop us a line on info@ragucommunication.com

DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?

RC : We would like to describe ourselves: Ragù Communication is a creative and strategic communication agency that operates in global contexts but works like a small, independent boutique; we personally oversee every step with sartorial care, from the creative idea to the final product, and we look after all our clients with the passion that we are renowned for.
