Designer Interview of Kaj Ransvi:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
KR : I have always had a great interest in design and to develop and improve various things I encounter in life, my school has been the 25 years I have worked in the design industry, has no formal design education, started in interior design which later went on to product design as well, has won a number of different international design awards for my products over the years.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
KR : I'm working with projects all around the world, my studio is small, in fact it is only me who works with the projects in the studio.
DI: What is "design" for you?
KR : Design is a difficult concept, it includes so much in my opinion, can be anything from a shape of a house to a small detail of a piece of jewelry, a complex product in the industry to a package of milk, but what you can see is when a designer has put their soul and passion into making the product optimal for the user.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
KR : I like to design and develop preexisting products, making them more user-friendly and production-efficient.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
KR : It was a small profile for LED strip lighting, really complex design but looks so clean and slim, it wan several awards, this made me to design a complete system for the lighting industry.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
KR : As long as it is the best quality and environment friendly I work with it.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
KR : The details are always in focus, the proportions are important for a product to feel good to the user.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
KR : I think it's important with the environment in mind of everything I design, we have to make sure that the future of our children looks bright.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
KR : I personally think we will go back a few steps to having products with higher quality and simpler user functions, today everything is extremely advanced and should have as low a price as possible.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
KR : I am inspired by everything around me, it can be a form of a car, a tree, a cloud, sometimes I can hear a song and get an idea for a product, so life itself is inspiring.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
KR : Futuristic, Bold, Elegant, Sophisticated, Smooth, Rocker, Hip Hop is a description of my style I should say, I dont think I work in a specific style.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
KR : I live in Sweden but think my style is a combination of impressions I have gained from all corners of the world.
DI: How do you work with companies?
KR : I am always open to exciting collaborations, both in interior design and product design, it is evolving to do assignments for other companies.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
KR : I think it is important that companies choose a designer who has a broad experience and that the company gives designers free hands to develop their visions.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
KR : Not to be afraid of failure, for every failure in a design process, you learn something important, and to never say no to an assignment, however small and tedious it can be, experience is what makes you a good designer.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
KR : Quality, quality and quality!
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
KR : To see the totality of a product or project and to be able to think outside the famous "Box".
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
KR : It depends so much on the design of the project, sometimes it can take a day and sometimes it takes a whole year.
