Designer Interview of XAVIER ALEXIS ROSADO:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

XAR : After, I saw a teacher sewing for a Jayuya Festival, I decided to participate for the same competition. For my surprise, I won the First Place in the National Indigenous Festival of Jayuya Puerto Rico. During that moment, I decided to be a designer. I believe I do have different abilities and skills to create unique piece of clothes.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

XAR : Currently, I’m working as a freelance.

DI: What is "design" for you?

XAR : Design is a dominion of the art, that you can express an idea for any purpose.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

XAR : I do like to design high fashion dress and books.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

XAR : “LA LAMPARA” was a project created for Miss Universe of Puerto Rico. Most I like for this design was the shape and idea.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

XAR : I did my first design to my sister Molly, I called “LLUVIA”. The design was a representation of the raining days in Puerto Rico. The material was nature rope material and quartz cords.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

XAR : My favorite material is ixtle.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

XAR : I do feel the most creative when I’m spending time with my nephews and nieces.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

XAR : I do focus more in the materials, body shape and be an exclusive design.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

XAR : After I completed a design, I do feel satisfied. Another goal is complete.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

XAR : Adrenaline is what I feel after my design are realized.

DI: What makes a design successful?

XAR : I believe what makes a design successful is the satisfaction of my customer.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

XAR : Such as the following aspects: No shape of body, style isn’t appropriate and quality of the textures.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

XAR : Contribute to new trends of the fashion and create significate changes to the society.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

XAR : I believe, design field will be able to have more flexible techniques of construction.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

XAR : My last exhibition was in National Indigenous Festival of Jayuya Puerto Rico. I would like to have my next exhibition in Italy.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

XAR : My inspiration come from visualization of my art.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

XAR : I describe my design style as a couture. Some of the main characteristics of my style are the geometric pieces, textural and shape of the design. All my designs are made with raw material.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

XAR : I live in Jayuya, Puerto Rico. Yes, I feel the cultural heritage of my country affects my design because I feel using raw material.

DI: How do you work with companies?

XAR : Freelance.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

XAR : Demonstrate responsibilities, discipline and unique style.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

XAR : My design process is simple, if I had an idea right now, I used a pencil & paper and start organizing my ideas. Then I used Photoshop Illustrator and start build it up the idea.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

XAR : Camillet Design, all my design for National Indigenous Festival of Jayuya Puerto Rico, Men Collection & Wedding dress.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

XAR : I usually wake at 6:00 am, go for a morning run with delicious breakfast and my day start. I drive 1hr 30min weekday to Yauco High School to teach my student how amazing is fashion design.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

XAR : Create a brand and a business.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

XAR : Negatives is a lot of competition and Positive opportunity express yourself and create a product.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

XAR : Discipline is my golden rule.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

XAR : Product quality skill design and esthetic design.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

XAR : Photoshop, Illustrator, YouTube and MS Excel spreadsheet.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

XAR : Depends of necessity of my design. Most of the time, I’m doing different design in my house.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

XAR : All depends of the necessary of the design, usually can take 3 weeks or more.

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

XAR : Can I see one of your design?

DI: What was your most important job experience?

XAR : My most important job experience was in Mr. Sid because was a different type of clothes that I was working on.

DI: Who are some of your clients?

XAR : Bang Energy Drink and Miss Universe of Puerto Rico.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

XAR : I’m currently working on a book. I enjoyed because all of this is new for me. I’m learning how to structure and complete a book for kids.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

XAR : I’m going to start my Master Degree and I would like to create my own brand and business.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

XAR : I do work as a team.
