Designer Interview of SHUI YEE CHIN:

DI: What is "design" for you?

SYC : Bringing an imagination to life.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

SYC : At this point, i only like designing women's fashion items.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

SYC : a ladies shoe. then I venture into jewelry.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

SYC : Everywhere I go. whatever I can see, travelling helps broaden my view about what's currently on offer in our markets. Like, how I went for a holiday trip in Tokyo just to see the kind of jewelry that were on offer.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

SYC : It needs to have a point of difference. and whether the item being developed will have a good market value.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

SYC : Uplifting. a sense of having to bring an idea from concept to reality.

DI: What makes a design successful?

SYC : Point of Difference and could enhance others ways of workings.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

SYC : Functionality, durability and if its safe.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

SYC : An item has to be safe for consumers. And no animal killings.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

SYC : I get my inspiration from my surroundings, so whatever I observe or experience in my daily life.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

SYC : very refined, classy and timeless designs are what i always have in mind. A good imagination helps a lot.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

SYC : I'm currently based in Melbourne. Living in one of the worlds most livable cities, and it being an international fashion capital, helps a lot with opening my eyes to the current trends and the different patterns and color palettes on offer.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

SYC : Positives is when I can put everything I like into my design. Negatives, is when there are quality rules to abide.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

SYC : Few months

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

SYC : how did i make it all happen.

DI: What was your most important job experience?

SYC : My job as a Buyers assistant, which helps me gained a lot of experiences in the retail industry and particularly with product development.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

SYC : I'm currently trying to create my own label.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

SYC : Develop Myself.
