Designer Interview of Tan Si Yuan:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

TSY : i was graduated from New Era College in Malaysia , major in interior design . i was always feeling like to be a design and improve our life style . yes i always wanted to be a designer

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

TSY : Based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Pins Studio is composed of a group of professionals that love design and quality lifestyle. We specialize in interior design, architecture and product design. DI: What is "design" for you?

TSY : Design to me is create or solving problem & improve our life

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

TSY : i like to design interior design involved most challenges .

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

TSY : i like modern minimalism design , because the idea modern & minimalist need to be very functional & very practical and yet have to be beautiful or good experience .

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

TSY : a small bed room

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

TSY : my favorite material for now is natural stone material , white marble & metal

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

TSY : when i was doing a sketches or starting to design that moment i feel the most creative

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

TSY : functional , nice looking , form , space , feeling , experience & movement

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

TSY : i feel great when i was designing

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

TSY : i will always find it very satisfy

DI: What makes a design successful?

TSY : when function meet emotion make me feel my design is a successful design

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

TSY : i will consider the practicality & user experience

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

TSY : as a designer is our responsibilities to improve our society & environment make sure the world always get improved to bring the world to next level

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

TSY : i think the future design will be involved on technology & nature a lot . i believe is a combination of super technology & nature .

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

TSY : the inspiration of my work if come from white , i combined the natural marble to a very modern minimalist house . the sources of inspiration is from winter & a japanese house .

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

TSY : i will describe my design style is modern minimalist design style . Being practical , functional & good experience is the key .

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

TSY : i leaving in malaysia , Kuala Lumpur city . i think the diversity of our couture affected my design a lot . i think is good so that i can have more open mind thinking to accept new things

DI: How do you work with companies?

TSY : i think working with a company is great can have a lot of discussion with team to create new idea or solving problem .

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

TSY : i will suggest company need to be very open minded to accept new idea from designer and prove space for them do mistake , because when we are designing or create some thing new we will always learn from our mistake and improve . companies should looking for some designer with passion about design .

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

TSY : normally i will start with a sketch then go in to more detail and back to the sketch again .

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

TSY : computer , pencil , paper , color pencil & camera

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

TSY : sun day morning i will cook breakfast with 4 half boiled egg 2 for mr 2 for my girl friend and coffee with her siting in our balcony enjoy the green and fresh air . after the breakfast me and her will do some planting to beautify our garden with a some tea to enjoy our sun .

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

TSY : i think young designer don't always putting too much attention on using technology to do the design , i think need to involve some part by hand sketches and as a designer we always learn from our mistake don't be too worries about the out come always need to be 100% perfection .

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

TSY : i think the positive part being a designer is always can created some thing and make others proud , the negatives part of the designer is always we have to keep making trying things that we don't even know the end result is untill we completed the project .

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

TSY : i think is when you are recognize or accept a problem only can solve a problem , but a lot of us don't dare to face some of the problem .

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

TSY : i think to have a good communication skill is important , so we can present our idea to normal people who don't understand what is our view about future .

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

TSY : computer , pen , pencil , paper . auto cad

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

TSY : i am really not good on time management of my self , i think the reason is being when i am in the mood of designing i will try to be very focus to finishing with perfect status .

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

TSY : normally i take about 3 month to 4 month some time take about a years

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

TSY : can this design still improve to be better ?

DI: What was your most important job experience?

TSY : when i was joining my 1st design company

DI: Who are some of your clients?

TSY : house or home owner

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

TSY : house or home owner , because that involve a lot of challenges and got to face different of people or owner

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

TSY : there's no future plans for now , i wish i can get more recognition from the world .

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

TSY : we work as a team

DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

TSY : currently i don't feel like talk about it
