Designer Interview of Daniel de de Burgos Bengoechea:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
DDDBB : I have always been quite creative, but I had never been focused on it. Let's say it was a natural talent that has been hidden and by focusing on the design of my product I have been able to discover it.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
DDDBB : My design focuses on fitness, it affects the improvement of health and physical condition, in addition to enabling recovery from injuries.
DI: What is "design" for you?
DDDBB : The purpose of design is to solve existing problems by searching for the best solutions through a combination of aesthetics, functionality and ergonomics.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
DDDBB : Fitness devices where design prevails over technology and help people improve their health and physical condition.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
DDDBB : Mine, since with very little means I have achieved a much more functional device than other more technological devices that have more means and resources. If I had to make a parallel, I consider that my device is like the Flintstones car, UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
DDDBB : It is my first design and it is my own, it is also a patented device and winner of the gold medal at the Geneva International Inventions Show (2023). It is an invention with an innovative and different design
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
DDDBB : My favorite materials are aluminum and carbon fiber.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
DDDBB : When I have a low mood I tend to be more creative, it gives me energy.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
DDDBB : Ergonomics, aesthetics and functionality.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
DDDBB : The pleasure of rediscovering my own potential.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
DDDBB : It is a great and unexpected emotion in my case.
DI: What makes a design successful?
DDDBB : Let it be a design adapted to everyone, easy to use and a beautiful aesthetic
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
DDDBB : Ergonomics, functionality, aesthetics and adaptability.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
DDDBB : Improve the possibilities in people's lives by offering a quality product that makes people's lives easier.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
DDDBB : Design is becoming too technological, I appreciate the natural talent of a more rudimentary design more than a more technological one
DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
DDDBB : Geneva Internation Exhibition of Inventions (2023)
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
DDDBB : I was very inspired by a documentary about Horacio Pagani, the Argentine designer and creator of Pagani brand sports cars. The documentary was titled "Man and Machine."
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
DDDBB : My approach is less is more. Sobriety and elegance above all, making your dream become an idea and finally a product. For me, the ideal designer is that person who is capable of making difficult things easy.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
DDDBB : I live in Bilbao (Spain). I don't think the cultural heritage of my country influences my designs. I believe that the Spanish citizen has a lot of potential but rarely discovers his talent. The climate and good gastronomy do not invite you to stay at home for hours to create a project, they invite you to enjoy and be distracted.
DI: How do you work with companies?
DDDBB : I am an entrepreneur, I do not work for anyone, it is a personal motivation and ambition. I am interested in licensing or selling my invention or design. I work as a Physical Education teacher in a school in Bilbao (Cervantes)
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
DDDBB : Look for an original person, with personality and who is capable of challenging established social standards.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
DDDBB : As a result of a need or lack detected in an area of society, I began to work on the idea. Later I look for characteristic materials and shapes that can complete my idea.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
DDDBB : Air purifier, cologne bottles, lamps, chairs and tables.
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
DDDBB : 1st Have breakfast 2º Play sports 3º Go to work: I teach children 4º Play sports: stretching in the afternoon 5º Dinner and bed
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
DDDBB : Talent without perseverance is useless. The best designer is the one who constantly fails and still keeps trying without getting discouraged.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
DDDBB : Positive aspects: knowing yourself better, traveling and recognition Negative aspects: the work or time it requires.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
DDDBB : Less is more. Sobriety, elegance, functionality, beauty and ergonomics. I eliminate details that may be inconsequential and non-functional.
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
DDDBB : Perseverance, curiosity and knowing how to admit mistakes. Success is achieved by recognizing mistakes.
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
DDDBB : I am an old school designer, the process began by drawing with paper and pencil and then I started making tests with cardboard so as not to make mistakes with the measurements. Later we moved on to 3D and the creation of the prototype. It went well the first time.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
DDDBB : It doesn't take me a specific time, ideas come to me. My ideas come naturally, I don't set a time limit.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
DDDBB : Design by stroke of genius. When I have an idea I write it down and try to work on it. When I'm busy and I'm not using my time productively, I leave it for another day. Specifically, my design did not take more than a week. The process from when I started the sketches to physically having the prototype will take about 10 months, however, the prototype was a final product. I was lucky to get it right the first time.
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
DDDBB : I haven't been asked any specific design questions yet.
DI: What was your most important job experience?
DDDBB : I am a Physical Education teacher and in all schools the work is similar. But winning the gold medal at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions (2023) was a highlight.
DI: Who are some of your clients?
DDDBB : I am an entrepreneur. My design is intended for people who practice fitness who want to improve their physical condition and health
DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
DDDBB : Your own designs because the ideas arise from your own creativity.
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
DDDBB : I don't know what the future may hold for me. If I could dream, I would like to license my patent and be able to participate in another similar project.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
DDDBB : I develop my designs on my own. I am quite creative.
DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
DDDBB : I have ideas but when working alone it is difficult to carry them out due to the financial amount involved.
DI: How can people contact you?
DDDBB : I have 2 addresses: Personal email: danilson14@hotmail.com Product email: info@sliderollerpro.com
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
DDDBB : I think the questions are very complete.
