HsiaoYun Tseng was born in 1981, currently living in New Taipei, Taiwan, engaged in illustration and design related work. Use computer graphics to draw curves bit by bit and find a unique way of creation. Good at gorgeous, romantic, oriental painting style, trying to create a strange world. Won Hiii Illustration 2014 "Excellence Award"; 2015 Greater China Illustration Awards "Excellence Award"; iJUNGLE ILLUSTRATION AWARDS 2022 "Self-improvement Merit Award" and other awards.

Designer Interview of Hsiao Yun Tseng:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

HYT : Graduated from the Commercial Design Department of Taichung Institute of Technology in Taiwan. After graduation, he engaged in web design. After work, he was inspired by his colleagues and started creating. I originally wanted to be a manga artist when I was a child, but after getting exposed to some image works when I grew up, I wanted to be an illustrator instead. At present, it is the combination of illustration and design, which is applied to more works.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

HYT : At present, it mainly focuses on illustration design, and the illustration style is gorgeous, romantic and oriental style.

DI: What is "design" for you?

HYT : Combining good ideas with aesthetics.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

HYT : nature, art, fashion.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

HYT : like too much...

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

HYT : Not too impressed

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

HYT : Plants; Behance/pinterest/instagram; Vector

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

HYT : when dreaming

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

HYT : The presentation of the concept and the integrity of the form.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

HYT : The feeling of always looking for an answer.

DI: What makes a design successful?

HYT : professional attitude

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

HYT : attractiveness

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

HYT : Improve and move towards a better life for people.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

HYT : At present, AI is popular and tends to be executed in a faster and more convenient way. In the future, it will focus more on concept creativity.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

HYT : Group exhibition of "ham books" in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. I hope that in the second half of 2024, I will have the opportunity to release new works and share them with you.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

HYT : Everywhere may be the source. I usually collect a lot of design and creation works, and I often explore and feel the natural environment.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

HYT : Gorgeous and dark, like mythology, magic, etc. Characteristic is the drawing of vectors. Reference, collect, think, draw.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

HYT : New Taipei City, Taiwan. Traditional culture, etc. will attract me and sometimes bring it into the work.

DI: How do you work with companies?

HYT : Fully understand the project information, maintain communication, and complete the progress on time.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

HYT : Take a good look at the works and choose those with high suitability for the project.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

HYT : Reference, collect, think, draw.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

HYT : Wooden furniture, coffee cups, bookshelves, computers, dinner plates

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

HYT : Drop off the kids to class, have a cup of coffee, work, pick up the kids, dinner, break

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

HYT : Read more, travel more, and learn from nature.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

HYT : Cover a wide range, get a lot of information; easily nervous.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

HYT : The integrity of the concept, the harmony of the composition, and the balance of colors.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

HYT : Absorbs like a sponge.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

HYT : illustrator+photoshop+pinterest

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

HYT : Arrange the work schedule and complete the progress according to the schedule.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

HYT : Depending on the complexity of the project. Sometimes two weeks, sometimes two or three months.

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

HYT : Can it be done faster?

DI: What was your most important job experience?

HYT : During the Shanger Digital period, I was stimulated to start creating.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

HYT : An illustration project that can express your own style can show your uniqueness.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

HYT : Develop a series of works and promote yourself. Prepare for next year's New Year's greetings.

DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

HYT : Not yet, still thinking about it.
