Alexey is a talented Lead designer on the all-Russian state TV channel "Russia-Culture", for over fourteen years. The channel broadcasts programs dedicated to various areas of cultural and social life - music, painting, theater, literature, cinema, religion, science, education, and history. Alexey took part in the main projects of the channel, marked by numerous national and international awards, and won the endless love of millions of viewers. And this is a valuable experience that, of course, raises a new step in his career. Among his works - a large-scale multimedia action "War and Peace: Reading a Novel", held within the framework of the Year of Literature, the original project "Tune in to Tchaikovsky", which combines television, classical music, and visual arts, the talk show "Agora" - his kind of an arena, where participants discuss topical issues of the time through artistic culture and its connection with society, the "Nutcracker" music competition, which opens up new names and gives talented children from Russia and other countries the opportunity to declare themselves as serious musicians, "The Grand Opera "is one of the most prestigious projects aimed at finding young opera singers, and, of course, "The Grand Ballet" is a unique television show that opens up new names in the art of ballet. And this is only a significant part of the programs that Alexey worked on. "Culture" is a versatile TV channel, morally and spiritually nourishing, enriching with knowledge and positive emotions. Alexey is also the owner of international television awards and awards such as Telly Awards, Summit Awards, in which thousands of designers and animators from all over the world take part. Alexey Borisov is a multiple member of the jury of international competitions. This year Alexey Borisov was invited to be a member of the jury for the A'Design award & competition.

Designer Interview of Alexey Borisov:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

AB : From a young age, I was captivated by the artistry and beauty of the world. I was drawn to the subtle elements present in my surroundings that convey a deeper metaphysical meaning. These elements often go unnoticed by many as they pass by, yet they have a profound impact on the emotions experienced by both optimistic and pessimistic individuals. Through design, one has the ability to give shape to any idea and translate it into a tangible visual form, be it an object or an animation. It is this ability that has strongly attracted me to the field of design.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

AB : Our television design studio has a clear objective: to effectively communicate world culture to our audience using a language that is easily understandable. This field of activity is incredibly diverse and fulfilling, as it allows me to directly engage with the beauty of masterpieces from various art forms such as music, art, sculpture, literature, theater, and cinema. The exploration of these artistic realms is a timeless theme that transcends generations, leaving a lasting imprint on the fabric of society.

DI: What is "design" for you?

AB : For me, design serves as a powerful means to communicate ideas through a visual language. It provides an opportunity to express concepts, emotions, and messages in a visually engaging and accessible way. Design allows for the transformation of abstract thoughts into tangible and compelling visual representations, creating a bridge between ideas and their intended audience. It enables effective storytelling, evokes emotions, and facilitates understanding and connection. Design, to me, is a medium through which ideas can be brought to life and shared with the world in a visually impactful manner.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

AB : One of the most significant and captivating projects I had the opportunity to work on was creating the introduction for a television educational game show titled "Night at the Museum." This unique production took place within a historical museum located near the Kremlin and involved filming during nighttime. Working on this project presented a multitude of exciting ideas and opportunities for creative implementation. The theme centered around historical graphics, allowing for the incorporation of visually appealing elements from different eras. It was a fascinating experience to bring together the rich history and aesthetics of the museum into the design, effectively capturing the essence of the show. The collaboration on this project encompassed a wide range of creative processes, from brainstorming and conceptualizing to designing and animating the introduction. It was crucial to strike the right balance between educational elements and entertainment, engaging the audience while imparting knowledge in an enjoyable manner. The result was a captivating and visually appealing introduction that set the stage for the show, immersing the viewers in the intriguing world of history and discovery. Being part of such a project was not only professionally fulfilling but also a chance to contribute to the educational and entertainment experience of the audience.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

AB : One of the most enriching and enjoyable themes to explore is the fusion of historical visual art with modern design elements, offering a fresh perspective through a juxtaposition of the past and the present. This creative approach involves reimagining and reinterpreting classical works of art in the context of contemporary aesthetics. By combining elements from different eras, this theme allows for a captivating exploration of the connections and contrasts between traditional art and modern design. It offers a fertile ground for innovative and thought-provoking creations that spark conversations and invite viewers to reconsider familiar masterpieces through a modern lens. This approach opens up a realm of possibilities for creating visually compelling designs that bridge the gap between the old and the new. By carefully integrating modern design elements, such as typography, color schemes, or digital techniques, with historical artworks, a fresh and engaging visual language emerges. The process of blending these elements requires a deep understanding of both art history and contemporary design trends. DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

AB : One of the most gratifying experiences in the creative process is witnessing the transformation of an idea, conceived in the mind, come to life on the screen through an animated video. It is a deeply rewarding feeling to see the vision that was initially imagined take shape and gain motion. When the final result reflects the original concept, it signifies the successful realization of the creative vision. Moreover, seeing the animated video resonate with the audience, evoke emotions, and effectively communicate the intended message adds another layer of satisfaction.

DI: What makes a design successful?

AB : I believe that several key factors contribute to the success of a design. It's a combination of visual appeal, effective communication, and achieving the intended objectives of the project. Firstly, visual appeal plays a crucial role. A successful design should have a visually pleasing composition, balanced use of colors, and compelling aesthetics. Attention to detail, precision in motion, and well-crafted visual elements all contribute to the overall impact of the design. In addition to visual appeal, effective communication is essential. A successful design effectively conveys its intended message or story to the audience. It should align with the brand identity, convey the desired mood or atmosphere, and deliver the intended information in a clear and concise manner. Furthermore, a successful design should fulfill its objectives. Whether it's promoting a product or service, telling a story, or creating an immersive experience, the design should achieve the desired outcome.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

AB : As a motion design professional, when evaluating a design, I consider several key aspects to determine its quality and effectiveness. First and foremost, I look at the overall visual impact and aesthetics of the design. This includes the composition, use of colors, typography, and visual elements. A good design should be visually appealing, well-balanced, and have a harmonious combination of elements. Next, I assess the clarity and effectiveness of the design's communication. A successful design should convey its intended message clearly and effectively. It should have a clear focal point, legible text, and visual elements that support and enhance the message. Furthermore, I evaluate the technical execution and craftsmanship of the design. This includes factors such as the smoothness of motion, attention to detail, and technical proficiency in utilizing design tools and software. A well-executed design demonstrates a high level of skill and expertise in its creation, which contributes to its overall quality. Lastly, I consider the originality and creativity of the design. A good design should bring a fresh and unique perspective, avoiding clichés and generic solutions. It should showcase innovative ideas, creative thinking, and the ability to push boundaries within the constraints of the project.

DI: How do you work with companies?

AB : My approach to working with companies is centered around effective communication, collaboration, and delivering high-quality results that align with their specific needs and objectives. First and foremost, I initiate a thorough discussion with the company to understand their vision, goals, and target audience. By gaining a deep understanding of their brand identity and messaging. During the creative process, I utilize a combination of artistic skills, technical expertise, and industry knowledge to bring the company's vision to life. This involves creating initial concept proposals, storyboards, and design mock-ups to present to the client for feedback and approval. I welcome their input and make necessary revisions to ensure their satisfaction. When it comes to execution, I utilize a range of industry-standard software and tools, such as After Effects, Cinema 4D, and other specialized programs, to create visually motion designs. I pay careful attention to detail, that the animations, transitions, and visual effects are seamless and polished. Throughout the project, I prioritize meeting deadlines and delivering on time.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

AB : I believe that every individual brings a unique perspective to the table. We all have our own distinct vision of the world, and while our ideas may sometimes intersect, it's our personal interpretation and creative approach that sets us apart. It's fascinating how multiple people can simultaneously conceive the same idea, but what truly matters is who recognizes the uniqueness within it and acts upon it first. When a creative spark ignites, it's essential to seize the opportunity and channel it through our own unique lens. We take that initial idea and weave it through the tapestry of our individual experiences, horizons, and worldview. It's through this process of processing and refracting that we infuse our creations with a distinct essence that resonates with our own artistic voice. In this vast world of design and motion, there's room for all of us to explore and express our creativity. It's the diversity of perspectives and interpretations that fuels innovation and drives the evolution of our craft. In the end, it's not just about the ideas we conceive, but how we shape and mold them into something that reflects our individuality. It's about finding that sweet spot where our ideas align with our personal vision, allowing us to create designs that captivate and inspire others.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

AB : I understand that there can be challenges and drawbacks in the creative process. One of the negative aspects is when the project requirements and trends align with movements or styles that may not resonate with my personal vision or preferences. It can be a struggle to find a balance between catering to the current market demands and staying true to my own artistic integrity. Another challenge is the time frame within which a project needs to be completed. While experienced designers have a good sense of how long it takes to bring an idea to life, the customer often has their own expectations and deadlines. This can lead to working under pressure and tight schedules, which may not always be conducive to producing the best possible final outcome. In such situations, it's important to manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and communicate openly with the client to ensure a balance between quality and meeting the desired timeline. Working in a stressful mode can have its drawbacks as well. Stress can impact creativity and the overall workflow, potentially hindering the ability to deliver the best possible result. It's important to find ways to manage stress, whether through proper planning, time management techniques, or taking breaks to recharge and maintain a fresh perspective. By finding a balance between productivity and self-care, it's possible to navigate through stressful periods and maintain the quality of the final project. In the end, it's crucial to navigate these challenges with professionalism and open communication. While there may be aspects of a project that don't align perfectly with personal preferences, it's essential to find a common ground that satisfies both the client's needs and the designer's creative vision. By staying adaptable, managing time effectively, and addressing stress in a healthy manner, motion designers can overcome these negative aspects and produce exceptional work that exceeds expectations.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

AB : I live by a golden rule when working with clients: to faithfully capture and reflect their ideas, ensuring their satisfaction. It's crucial to respect the client's established style and preferences, while also pushing the boundaries and surpassing their previous work. This involves introducing fresh concepts and innovative production techniques into the pipeline, ultimately raising the overall quality and impact of the project. While respecting the client's chosen style, I also seize the opportunity to introduce new elements that elevate the project. This could involve incorporating the latest design trends, implementing cutting-edge animation techniques, or exploring innovative visual approaches. I can deliver work that exceeds the client's expectations and sets new standards. Meeting deadlines is another key aspect of my professional approach. I understand the importance of timely delivery in the fast-paced world of motion design. By carefully planning and managing the project timeline, setting realistic milestones. In essence, my golden rule revolves around capturing the client's vision, respecting their chosen style, and going above and beyond to deliver exceptional results. By combining effective communication, innovation, and a commitment to meeting deadlines, I strive to create motion design projects that not only meet the client's expectations but also surpass them, leaving a lasting impression and fostering long-term collaborations.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

AB : As a motion design, there are key skills that play a crucial role in my daily work. One of the foremost skills is the art of composition, which involves strategically placing objects within a given space. It's about creating visually pleasing arrangements that guide the viewer's eye and convey the intended message effectively. Whether it's arranging characters, graphics, or text elements, mastering composition is essential for creating visually engaging designs. Another vital skill is the harmonious distribution and interaction of colors. Colors have a significant impact on emotions and can greatly enhance the visual appeal of a design. It's important to have a keen understanding of color theory and how different hues, shades, and tones work together. By skillfully combining colors, I can evoke specific moods, create visual hierarchy, and establish a cohesive visual identity. Additionally, working with type compositions is a fundamental skill in motion design. Typography plays a crucial role in conveying information and setting the tone of a design. It involves selecting appropriate fonts, arranging text elements, and creating hierarchy through font sizes, weights, and styles. By understanding the principles of typography and leveraging its power, I can effectively communicate messages and enhance the overall visual impact of my work. These skills, composition, color theory, and typography, are essential tools in my motion design toolbox. They allow me to create visually appealing and impactful designs that capture the attention of viewers and convey the desired message.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

AB : As a motion design professional, my daily toolkit is filled with some incredible software that helps me bring my creative visions to life. Let's dive into the programs I rely on the most: First up is After Effects, the industry-standard for motion graphics and visual effects. It's my go-to for crafting captivating animations, seamless transitions, and adding that extra flair to my projects. With its extensive array of effects and plugins, After Effects is like a playground where I can unleash my creativity. Cinema 4D is another powerhouse in my arsenal. It's a versatile 3D modeling and animation software that allows me to create stunning visuals and lifelike characters. Whether it's designing intricate scenes or animating dynamic characters, Cinema 4D provides me with the tools to make it happen. When it comes to pushing the boundaries and achieving mind-bending simulations, Houdini takes the spotlight. It's a complex yet rewarding software that lets me delve into the world of dynamic simulations and procedural effects. From realistic fluid simulations to intricate particle systems, Houdini is my secret weapon for bringing awe-inspiring visuals to life. Blender is another gem in my toolbox. It's a powerful and open-source software that excels at procedural modeling and texturing. With its intuitive interface and robust feature set, Blender enables me to create detailed 3D models and add realistic textures with ease. It's a versatile companion that never fails to impress. Lastly, Substance Painter adds that final touch of magic to my projects. It's a fantastic tool for texturing 3D models, allowing me to paint directly onto the surfaces and bring them to life with rich and intricate details. With Substance Painter, my creations come alive with vibrant colors and realistic textures. With each software bringing its unique capabilities to the table, I have everything I need to bring my ideas to life and captivate audiences with awe-inspiring visuals.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

AB : Time management is a critical aspect in television production, as all broadcasts are scheduled well in advance. The limited time available requires careful prioritization to ensure efficient workflow. One effective approach is to focus on developing the main concept early on, allowing for timely approval and providing more time for intricate detailing and drawing. By dedicating sufficient time to solidify the main concept, the design process can proceed smoothly and with a clear direction. This strategic approach prevents unnecessary time spent on drawing intricate details before the concept is finalized. Instead, the emphasis is placed on swiftly establishing the core vision, which then allows for more time to be allocated to the crucial stages of drawing and meticulous detailing. Efficient time distribution and prioritization of tasks not only facilitate the smooth execution of the project but also enable the production of high-quality designs within the given timeframe. By allocating time wisely and swiftly establishing the main concept, can effectively manage their resources and ensure the successful completion of the project.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

AB : The average timeline for creating an intro for a documentary film or TV show typically ranges from one to two weeks, taking into account various factors such as project requirements, existing resources, and reference materials. The specific timeframe may vary based on the complexity of the task and the availability of ready-made graphic elements. During the initial stages of development, it is crucial to gather all necessary references and resources to inform the design process. Having a comprehensive understanding of the desired visual style, theme, and tone greatly aids in expediting the overall workflow. If suitable graphic elements are readily available, it can significantly reduce the time required for creation.

DI: Who are some of your clients?

AB : The primary clientele for my design services includes studios that produce documentaries for central television channels. These collaborations involve creating visually engaging graphics and animations that enhance the storytelling and presentation of factual content. Additionally, I also cater to large companies operating in the realm of entertainment, encompassing a diverse range of projects such as shows, concerts, and competitions. In these cases, my design work aims to captivate audiences, set the desired ambiance, and contribute to the overall immersive experience of the event. Collaborating with such esteemed clients allows me to apply my design expertise to a variety of exciting and impactful projects.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

AB : In the near future, I have a strong desire to focus on developing concepts for creating intro graphics for film projects. This particular area of design fascinates me, as it involves crafting captivating and visually striking introductions that set the tone and immerse viewers into the cinematic experience. I am excited about the opportunity to utilize my creative skills to conceptualize and design unique and memorable intro graphics that leave a lasting impression on the audience. Through careful attention to visual storytelling, motion graphics, and effective use of typography, I aim to create intros that effectively convey the essence of the film and captivate viewers from the very beginning. I look forward to exploring this aspect of design and contributing to the immersive world of film through my creative contributions.
