Designer Interview of Make It Works:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

MIW : My father is a skillful fit-out contractor so I was immersed into spatial work during my growth age. His passion and great work had proved how wonderful is when a nice space is created, and thus I am now an interior designer, as well as a good project consultant.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

MIW : Our company, Make It Works, was founded in 2015. Having the chance immersing into retail store planning all the way till now with several international brands range from fashion to accessories, our team has grown to provide one-stop service for our clients, from design to fit-out. Our mission is to craft tailor-fitted space to our clients.

DI: What is "design" for you?

MIW : Design's something that, one can look at it, feel it, and use it. It is different from pure Art, as each designed product is not only having aesthetics and meanings being considered, but it also need to be practical.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

MIW : I am a super friend of interior space and architecture, which it is the only sector in the design industry that every product of it is wrapping around human-beings and provide contextual changes when people move.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

MIW : My design world starts with a retail store plannings for a world-known fashion brand.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

MIW : I keen on using natural elements in my designs and among those Natural Woods are always my favorite. Woods are always providing warmness and calmness to our designs. Every design could be different when you add wood elements into it.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

MIW : Client needs is always my first sight for each of my designs, as they are always the one who use it and having emotional interactions with the space. Even for public space, I would consider all possible visitors types and try to create space that could evoke their feelings.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

MIW : This is always the best moment for me when I see the real things of mine being built. It is more than just happiness as I know my design could bring emotions to every other ones.

DI: What makes a design successful?

MIW : A successful design, for me, could always make people feel and think. When someone enter the space, you start thinking what the space do, or alternatively the space makes you feel something. Based on different purpose, the space should lead people to corresponding emotions that match the usage of space. Say when you are in an art gallery, you should provide a calm, quiet space to let visitors to focus on the art pieces and feel their inside thoughts. Or when you enter your home, you should be able to feel the comfort and sense of belongings immediately because it is your own space.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

MIW : Visual aesthetics is essential for a good design but I would be more looking at the practical side when I make my judgement. Design must always be practical and useful, otherwise it is just an art piece. Good design should always fits user needs, not just the needs they told you, but also the needs that they don't know yet.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

MIW : Designer is a pioneer in all ways, not just evoking aesthetics of matters, but also having an ability driving human's thoughts and styles. We are also an environment protector, as we always create products using natural elements and sometimes we would try to make our design immersed into the surrounding environment. Thus we need these natural things be sustainable and always ready-for-use in our design.
