We, as the Designer Interviews ("DI") had the distinct pleasure and opportunity to interview award-winning, most creative and innovative Chance Xie ("CX").
Mrs. Chance Xie is a trend setter and tastemaker in luxury travel. She led a successful career in finance before founding Greater China's preeminent luxury travel designer Journeys by Chance. Without formal training in design, Mrs. Chance drew on her how-know of world's best and impeccable sense of luxury and style to reinvent the art of babywearing. A mother of two, she is passionate to advocate cultivating love of nature and happiness from within in our next generation.

Designer Interview of Chance Xie:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
CX : A year stranded in paradise in Fiji during the Pandemic, inspired me to become a designer and advocate for happiness from our connection with people and nature. I was an award-winning painter since a young age, however, I pursued a career in finance. Finally, I was inspired enough to focus on my creativity and bring design work that is meaningful to the world.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
CX : IVAU means Bonding in Fijian. Inspired by natural beauty of Fiji, IVAU dedicates to refocus connection in our lives and celebrate beauty of nature.
DI: What is "design" for you?
CX : Design elevates what we see in daily life to timeless creations.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
CX : My work is inspired by the spellbinding beauty of nature and celebrate our time spend together.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
CX : My favourite design is our Lagoon Butterfly collection that showcases the mesmerizing view of lagoon meets deep ocean.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
CX : Baby wrap carrier
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
CX : Hand painted prints
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
CX : When I'm in nature
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
CX : Timeless beauty of the creation and tell an inspiring story
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
CX : I'm at my happiest when I'm designing

CX : Be evoke emotion and feeling
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
CX : Does it have deeper meaning?
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
CX : Create a thing of beauty and advocate for better world
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
CX : I'm not familiar about this.
DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
CX : My last exhibition was in HK and I would like to hold annual exhibition in HK.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
CX : My source of inspiration comes from the abundant beauty of nature.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
CX : My style is romantic, inspiring, storytelling. My approach to design is to elevate the eyes can see to timeless creation.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
CX : I live in HK & Fiji, two extremes of worlds, both inspire me so much.
DI: How do you work with companies?
CX : I only design for my own brand.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
CX : When a view/scenery inspire me, I think about why it touches my heart and turn that into my design creation.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
CX : Follow your heart
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
CX : To elevate what the eyes can see
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
CX : I only finish the work when I'm completely satisfied with the result.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
CX : My design process is long as I'm a perfectionist. It can take up to a year to finish a design pattern.
DI: What was your most important job experience?
CX : I design once in a lifetime holidays for UHNW families in HK/China through my travel company Journeys by Chance, aside from product design for IVAU.
DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
CX : I'm currently working on a design inspired by the mangrove rivers of Fiji.
