Designer Interview of Elizaveta Oputina:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
EO : From a young age, creativity was my preferred pursuit over social interactions, and I always aspired to be an artist or designer. When it came time to choose a profession, I selected architecture, as it seemed both vast and fascinating. After graduating from university, I transitioned to interior design, finding it a better fit for me. I enjoy the numerous ways it allows for self-expression and making impactful statements. Currently, I'm deeply immersed in exploring AI and its integration into the fields of design and architecture.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
EO : I'm self-employed and primarily focus on the visual aspects of a project. My main role as a designer is to present project ideas in the most suitable and engaging way.
DI: What is "design" for you?
EO : Design is the fusion of the author's ideas and concepts, shaped by their experience and vision, along with external factors like client requirements or usability. Good design effectively balances aesthetics and functionality, achieving harmony.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
EO : I enjoy designing public spaces the most because they allow for creativity and imagination to flourish.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
EO : Alvar Aalto's design inspires me the most. As a Finnish architect who designed buildings, interiors, and furniture, he demonstrates how expansive the field of architecture can be, allowing creators to transcend specific typologies.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
EO : The first project I worked on involved designing interiors for a multi-story residential complex.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
EO : Now I'm very interested in the field of AI and how we can reduce design time thanks to new technologies. I believe it's an excellent tool in the hands of a designer, allowing simplification of many project processes.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
EO : I feel creative when the client trusts me, and I sense that our aesthetic perspectives align.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
EO : I focus on functionality, aesthetics, and client preferences.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
EO : I feel a mix of creativity, satisfaction, and sometimes challenge when designing.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
EO : I feel a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment when my designs are realized, but I would also say that I enjoy coming up with ideas more because it's the process of giving birth to a project and it depends solely on me.
DI: What makes a design successful?
EO : A successful design effectively solves its intended problem while resonating with its audience aesthetically and functionally.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
EO : When judging a design, I first consider its functionality, aesthetic appeal, and how well it meets its intended purpose or solves a problem.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
EO : From my point of view, the responsibilities of a designer for society and the environment include creating sustainable solutions, promoting social equity through inclusive design practices, minimizing environmental impact, and fostering innovation that improves quality of life while respecting cultural diversity and heritage.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
EO : The design field is rapidly evolving with the integration of AI, which is revolutionizing the design process. AI enables designers to streamline workflows, generate complex designs faster, and optimize user experiences through data-driven insights. In the future, AI will likely become more integrated, offering predictive design capabilities, personalized user interactions, and sustainable design solutions, ultimately pushing boundaries and shaping a more efficient and responsive design industry.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
EO : Design inspiration for my work comes from various sources. I often find creativity sparked by nature's forms and patterns, cultural diversity, art history, and everyday interactions. I also draw inspiration from contemporary design trends, technological innovations, and discussions with peers. Keeping an open mind and exploring different disciplines help me stay creative and innovative in my approach to design.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
EO : I focus on minimalism and simplicity in my design style, drawn to its clarity and elegance. This exploration stemmed from a desire to create impactful designs that prioritize essential elements while eliminating clutter. The main characteristics of my style include clean lines, functional spaces, and a harmonious balance of form and function. My approach to design emphasizes thoughtful reduction, where every element serves a purpose, enhancing user experience and visual appeal through simplicity.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
EO : I'm originally from Russia, but recently I've been living in different countries and moving frequently. I've lived for extended periods in Turkey, Thailand, and Serbia, and each time I've discovered a new world. I enjoy experiencing different cultures and absorbing them little by little. This influences both my approach to design and my life in general.
DI: How do you work with companies?
EO : I mainly work with companies as a 3D artist, creating visual aspects of projects for them. My clients are from different countries, and I enjoy interacting with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. I collaborate with companies from the USA, Lithuania, and Russia.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
EO : In the first place, companies should pay attention to the designer's portfolio.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
EO : If I work as an interior designer, I carefully study the tasks set by the client. I communicate with them to understand their nature and try to get to know them better. Then, I create a mood board to grasp the concept. Afterward, I compile room-specific mood boards with furniture, colors, and finishes. It's crucial for me at every stage of the design process to ensure that my design aligns with the client's expectations. Once the concept is approved, I proceed to create working documentation and project visualizations.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
EO : In my home, the main elements for me are my desk and chair, as I work from home and their quality greatly influences my well-being and comfortable work environment.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
EO : I develop my designs myself.
DI: How can people contact you?
EO : You can contact me by mail: interior.studio.lio@gmail.com
