Designer Interview of Tanin Dehkhoda:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

TD : I’ve always been drawn to art and design, especially the way jewellery can tell a story and express identity. I studied jewellery design and later earned a Master's in Luxury Jewellery Management at Birmingham City University. For over a decade, I’ve worked as a designer, constantly evolving my style. Becoming a designer wasn’t a choice it felt natural. Creating jewellery is how I express emotion, culture, and beauty in a wearable form.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

TD : My brand, Tanin D, is a reflection of my personal design journey—where traditional craftsmanship meets contemporary storytelling. I focus on creating meaningful, handcrafted jewellery that blends cultural influence with modern elegance. Each piece is designed with attention to detail and individuality, often inspired by emotion, memory, and form. The studio is a space where art and narrative come together to create timeless, wearable pieces.

DI: What is "design" for you?

TD : For me, design is a way of translating emotion, thought, and identity into something tangible. It’s not just about aesthetics—it’s about meaning, intention, and connection. In jewellery, every line, form, and material choice tells a story. Design is how I communicate without words.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

TD : Design should have storytelling, inspiration or telling a new story.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

TD : Contemporary ring that I design for my collection life under microscope, each piece inspired from harmony of instruction of tiny cell from human under microscope.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

TD : It was a rings inspired from organic shape. It was 2 rings connected together by 3 chains. I design this for Ana gold gallery.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

TD : Matrix gold it’s my favorite software and I love sketching jewellery with water colors

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

TD : After hiking usually or smelling the flowers

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

TD : Eye catching and casting process.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

TD : Excited and happiness.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

TD : Excited and fulfilled

DI: What makes a design successful?

TD : Harmony of beauty and story

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

TD : After creative design should considering how the manufacturing process can improve and possible.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

TD : Creative designers are responsible.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

TD : Design field could improve our future.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

TD : It was last year 2024 September London Olympia jewellery show and Imight be exbahit for the next one in London as well.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

TD : My creativity and inspiration usually come from the stories that is in my mind, the issue or the happiness I face in my life.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

TD : All of my design ideas have a story behind, whether it’s for mass market or for artistic purpose. I made engagement ring collection for mass market inspired from flowers and I won award for high commercial collection of the year in United Kingdom 2024.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

TD : I live in United Kingdom at the moment. It’s good for me because uk have a lots of international people and I it’s easy for me to connect with big designers in the world.

DI: How do you work with companies?

TD : I was a freelance designer until I moved to UK and i started position at Hockley mint as a new product developer after I graduated my masters luxury jewelry management.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

TD : The 3 month probation period it’s very important.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

TD : First I have a story in my mind, then I try to bring it on a paper, then trying to make a 3D modeling and then send the file to 3d printer for prototype. If all it’s good I will send it to casting.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

TD : I’m not sure.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

TD : It’s like a normal day like every one but I try to have a nice breakfast because make me more productive and help me to have a creative mind.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

TD : If you wanna be perfect at something practice thousands times

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

TD : Practice makes you perfect. Read and watch and get inspired.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

TD : Creative mind. Learning about the downtime and happiness.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

TD : That’s a good question, I love to play most with control points, curves are so important

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

TD : I love designing and I am pretty fast at designing

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

TD : For me it depends how complex is the design but usually between 1to 3 hours
