Designer Interview of Kenyon Yeh:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

KY : I always love design whether in manufacturing process, craftsman, handmade and problem solving. I chalenge my self to push more my personal identity and creativity and presented to the audience.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

KY : Kenyon Yeh Design Studio established in 2010, we based in London from 2010-2011 and at present we are based in Taipei, Taiwan. Our studio are working in furniture, lighting, and product area. We are running our personal design project and also working with manufacturer across europe and asia.

DI: What is "design" for you?

KY : Design is a chalenge, where we always want something different in our life and this is our job to think out of the box.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

KY : Furniture and lighting

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

KY : My favorite design is designing a shelf or a cabinet. For me there is many possibilities to design a shelf become interesting object to enlighten a space. In my opinion, there always a shelf or cabinet in every spaces.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

KY : UNIKEA collection.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

KY : Every material that I can feel or touch mostly.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

KY : In my personal space with some music.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

KY : Details, appearance, and size.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

KY : Always excited.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

KY : Excited and looking for more gap to improve.

DI: What makes a design successful?

KY : Just keep doing and never stop trying different method or possibilities.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

KY : Appearance or color.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

KY : Less machine manufacturing process, less plastic products.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

KY : No comment

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

KY : My last exhibition is Milan 2011 and London Design Festival , TENT London 2011. My next exhibition is Maison and Objet 2012.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

KY : My inspiration come from daily objects surround me indoor or outdoor. I feed my creativity with imagination from different types of object or action that happening everyday.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

KY : My design style is no style, it keep changing every time on each project I designed. I just using my instinct to approach every project. That's why for me it is challenging how each project will lead me to the final step.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

KY : Now I based in Taipei, Taiwan. I had my experience and training in the UK, at present I just getting started to know more deeper what can I learn from Taiwan society and then bring those element together in my project.

DI: How do you work with companies?

KY : I work in my own design studio.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

KY : no comment

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

KY : My macbook pro, iphone, moleskine sketchbook, my chair and shelf

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

KY : Half day in studio and half day going outside for fresh air.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

KY : Be creative and first must know that design is hard and tough.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

KY : no comment

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

KY : Design for the people.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

KY : Rhinoceros 3d and sketchbook

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

KY : no comment

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

KY : It depends on the project, usually it takes 1 month or 2 months for design and developing then next 2-3 months for manufacturing.

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

KY : Why do you become a designer?

DI: What was your most important job experience?

KY : no comment

DI: Who are some of your clients?

KY : Manufacturers in Europe and Asia.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

KY : Making prototypes and testing them.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

KY : Keep the work and collaboration.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

KY : I work independent.
