Designer Interview of Nicholas Ho:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

NH : The story can be traced back to my father, whom have been practicing architecture for more than 30 years. I was always exposed to the field and gradually design becomes natural to me, the art of problem solving and aesthetic expression are what constantly keep me interested in pursuing this industry.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

NH : I started the office in the firm belief that design is for everyone, it must be because when the dawn of human civilisation, from hardware to software, philosophy to science, all are designed in a way. But with the global commercialise scene today, it is difficult for one to still chase true designs Seeing so, I believe it is necessary to promote design, not for design sake, but to enrich as well as witness human civilisation in the making

DI: What is "design" for you?

NH : Design is everything. It is you and me. It is what we do and who we are. Design is the result of our intellectual being. From the moment we wake up to the moment we retire, it is everything that we see, touch, use and love. Yet more often than not, design exists as something that has been thought of and executed by someone else. We reach out to products without original imagination; we allow that which is readily available guide and control what we do. We think little of what we want to do and what we could do. By nature fluid and dynamic, design is guided by rules and should be bounded by none. Each one of us is unique, our tastes, our lives, our bodies, our minds and for this simple reason, we should not surrender ourselves to being slaves to generic inventions. Instead, why not take charge and let our imaginations reign free? At NH Design, we work with you and we work for you. We learn about you and we focus on you. From concept to design, from production to materialisation, at every step of the process, we encourage your input because we firmly believe that to produce outstanding design is to construct collaborative visions. NH Design specialises in custom made designs, designs that originate and evolve from the inspiration of those who will ultimately use them.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

NH : Personal projects, like private houses, shops, galleries or offices. It is because when you design something of this scale, you get more room for creativity for the user, his/her specific needs, making it a truly custom made piece of architecture, designed to make the user's unique way of living easier

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

NH : It will be the awarded gallery piece, it all comes down to the final product, the client has given me maximum freedom and virtual no budget constraint. As a designer, I was able to push new boundaries and have complete control over the design decisions and on site process

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

NH : A bar table

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

NH : I am quite old school in that area, I love rendered concrete

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

NH : In the mornings and just before bed

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

NH : Problem solving with elegance

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

NH : Nervous and pleased, nervous as in what other people or the client might think, pleased as the hard work is finally realised

DI: What makes a design successful?

NH : When the client's brief is met and beyond his/her wildest imagination

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

NH : Does it answer to the brief of the project, has it satisfied the required elements and demands

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

NH : To provide what is good for the people at the present and also with a keen anticipation of the future Sustainable and quality living for future generations to come

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

NH : Many colleagues will disagree with me, but the role of architects are diminishing, power taken by contractors or developers, the traditional master masonry role of architects are fading away. Some architects chooses to differnetiate, but I believe in convergence, where all arts of building will soon combined once again into one body of master build, like centuries ago, the architect is also the engineers which is also the site supervisor for the contractors. The identity of master building where all form of architecture and construction will once again merges together

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
