DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
CS : I came from design and art based family. My father is an architect and my mother is a painter. I grow up in my father's architectural office and also my mother painting exhibitions and her atelier that which is also our home. Therefore,in my childhood, I always made some architectural models and some paintings in long years. I won 1st degree award in several painting competition in our country in my childhood. I realized that so this backround effected me as being a designer. And I always beign a designer.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
CS : Craft312 studio is a design company with a wide range of its understanding on Architecture, Interior Architecture and Landscape. The aim of the continuing design practise is searching for the new materials and production techniques on every project that it has a modern understanding with an unique part in respectful for nature. Craft312 as a design team that is searching for functional and aestetic solutions to users without underestimating the human factors.
DI: What is "design" for you?
CS : It is an adventure of discovery and its also cretaing feelings of ambiance.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
CS : I like design spaces which are people who can experience and feel our creations like public spaces.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
CS : My graduate project is my favorite design. I wish I will design project like that in the future. It was deconstrictivist Tv studio.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
CS : Users and needs.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
CS : Acrylic materials and lighting technologies.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
CS : Satisfaction
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
CS : Design conciousness and feelings of users.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
CS : I really feel a little bit stressed and nervous,anxiety. But the design will becoming if I want to it be, I feel more relax.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
CS : Its amazing feeling and exciting.
DI: What makes a design successful?
CS : Focus on every detail and understanding users.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
CS : Aesthetic aspects and proportions
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
CS : Before teh society and environment, designer have responsibility for human becsuse human being is make society and enviroment(built). But they have responsibilty for nature enviroment for making society and built enviroment. They have to respect for nature and dont destroy it.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
CS : I think more nature respected projects will evolving.
DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
CS : I joined mixed exhibition about interior design field in 2010. I want to hold an exhibition about our completely projects in 10 years.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
CS : My child that he is 4 years old is one of the most inspiration in my life.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
CS : I dont have any design style.. Because ı dont beleive that the design has a style... It is dangerous for repeating.. My designs are evolving with experimental way.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
CS : I live in Ankara/Turkey. In the 70's, the buildings are designed in with Bahaous ecole. Especially Ankara, and also especially our office building. I still affected that kind of modernism.
DI: How do you work with companies?
CS : First of all, we must understand what they want clearly. Then we design buildşng etc., we have make several meetings, and then conclude the project. In apllication process, we will give consultancy in the site.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
CS : I think they listen voices coming from insides. Talk the designer and understand how much they understand you.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
CS : First of all, I am searching visions in my mind. And then, ı sketch up with freehand drawings, lots of drawings.. If dont draw with my hand, ı cant realize the good design. Then ı transfer skteches to my design team, they draws them in 3d. And I look it up in computer with every details. Change something or evolving...
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
CS : 1. Cloakroom with shelfs as a seperation designed by me 2.Corian Bathroom sink designed by me 3. Service openning between kitchen and dining room. 4. A Sofa designed in 70's 5. Low table designed by me
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
CS : I am not wake in earlier ( I will be in office 9.30)because I work and think in the night, and sleep late. When ı arrived the office, ı check people works. I check mails and answer them. And then Work. Work. Work......
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
CS : They have to Beleive inside voice.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
CS : There is no negative thing become a designer for me. The most positive thing that always working with brain activity.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
CS : Listen voice of my creative soul.
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
CS : Drawing with hand..
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
CS : Pencils, markers, sketch paper.. Then computer.. 3d max usually.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
CS : I usually beleive myself for making decisinons quickly and also beleive decisions which ı made. It makes time consuming..
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
CS : It changes to project scale. But I make decisions very quickly.
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
CS : How do you find a lots of diffrent thinkings in your projects?
DI: What was your most important job experience?
CS : I am working on a big university project (160.000 m2). This is the most important project in my life now.
DI: Who are some of your clients?
CS : Generally big investors and holdings.
DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
CS : Public spaces. Because most amount of people can experince those kind of projects.
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
CS : I want to work with more big investors and most known brands in the world.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
CS : I work as a team. First , I and my partner (my wife) develops the design then transfer to our team.
DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
CS : We work on the big university project in Ankara that called Ipek University. It has 160.000 closed spaces that includes, preparatory school, rectorate, faculty buildings, library, lots of restaurants , film platos etc. It will be completd in 2015.
DI: How can people contact you?
CS : Mostly, they heard us from others and they have a reference.
