Designer Interview of Sung-Hyeon Yoo:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

SY : I was a science boy who always have passion to learn and massive curiosity. and always have some urge to make the world idealistic watching crime scenes in news. One day my class teacher suggested me how about invention and then I knew that I born to create. this boy who want to be a hero thoughts that design is only way to save my world. And its fun too! so it starts.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

SY : Mm is my self. one man company. about to grow because just started. I will gather some members who think like me and grow like Andy Warhol's 'the Factory', but have more intense purpose.

DI: What is "design" for you?

SY : design is my only way to realize my final destination. also it makes me joyed when I design so design is my entertainment. and I learn some abstract knowledge or scientific knowledge while researching or designing so design is my learning site.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

SY : I like drawing with my hands, make a real model or researching. I like the whole process so its hard to say one the most.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

SY : I like them all. actually I have make logo, clothes, car, smart phone, gadgets, living things or so.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

SY : not yet I have not.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

SY : material : plastic for manufacture.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

SY : when I thinking solutions about the problem. I make various solutions in no time. Or, when I drawing a design I become concentrated and create beautiful shape.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

SY : innovation with possibility.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

SY : I concentrate hard like a artist. Yes!

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

SY : not yet I have not. but I think it will like adopting a Golden Retriever puppy.

DI: What makes a design successful?

SY : innovation. simple mechanism. inner beauty.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

SY : Can it brings people a true happiness? also does not contains false factor?

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

SY : visual stimulus is the most important factor influencing a person's life. so designers SHOULD, consider to not just make designs luxury, but contain good factors. This can be a inner beauty, message, or emotional enhance. It is abstract.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

SY : the slope headed above but it becomes more and more horizontal.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

SY : not yet I have not. I wish to hold in New York.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

SY : books I have read. fantasy and science fiction does helped but sometimes plain science books does a lot. I inspired mostly in living beautiful creatures.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

SY : When I design appearance I am like a emotional chicken. I do not think and draw. but design about solutions and function I am not a chicken. I think a lot.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

SY : I live in Korea. I have not feel anything yet.

DI: How do you work with companies?

SY : not yet I have not.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

SY : watch portfolio. hire a lot and watch as an investment.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

SY : find problem and make various solutions. conclude and research. modeling and render.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

SY : Can I just pick most 1. its my wooden music box. its big

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

SY : not regular. have a problem.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

SY : because I am super super young, I have almost nothing. but I want to say this : watch good movies, listen more old-pop or rocks, read many books.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

SY : positive is that you can enjoy your work and satisfy. negative is that you become odd. As super oddity, I like odd but relationships will be more difficult.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

SY : does it contains true happiness?

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

SY : It is not a skill, but I want to say this. 'a warm heart'

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

SY : keyshot, photoshop, 3ds max, mudbox and zbrush.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

SY : If I have some group members I will divide work. Alone, I usually do it one by one. take extra more time, but extra more quality.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

SY : about 2 weeks to 1month

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

SY : about its working mechanism

DI: What was your most important job experience?

SY : well, hard to say

DI: Who are some of your clients?

SY : not yet I have not.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

SY : I love them all. One anecdote to say is, when I make Han-bok, I actually make the clothes and it was just joyful

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

SY : gather more members to grow Mm. make it company in 5 years.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

SY : I am doing my self. but I will co-work with more people.

DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

SY : I am now making 'stargazer' a car which has a emotional beauty. I want to beat some luxury cars with this because they are just growing vanity in world-wide.
