Designer Interview of Webber (Ping-Chun) Chen:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
W(C : I was born in 1993 in Taipei, Taiwan, came to New Zealand in 2008, at the time i enjoyed sculpturing a lot during the time and decided to study Architecture in the Victoria University of Wellington. I had been always interesting in making things physically by my own hand and skill, and perhaps one day I can design a house for the people I love and care one day in future.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
W(C : The furniture piece was designed and specified as part of the SARC 212/312 Furniture Design Course at the School of Architecture, Victoria University of Wellington. The course is coordinated by Lecturer Natasha Perkins and took place over the Summer Trimester with Metal Art Ltd. as a sponsor client. The design was further developed as part of an internship with Con-Di Interior Corporation in Taiwan, resulting in a prototype which takes into account costing and production methods.
DI: What is "design" for you?
W(C : For me, design is to express creative through into practice.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
W(C : Sculpture with geometric shapes.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
W(C : Concert Stage concept in a stadium.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
W(C : Timber, loves working with timber
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
W(C : Always after i cooked myself a nice dinner.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
W(C : Detailing, aiming for perfections
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
W(C : Fireworks! Standing on top of the cliff and breath hard.
DI: What makes a design successful?
W(C : Great details.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
W(C : Whether the design will make you look more then 10 sec.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
W(C : For society, I will say joy; environment, embrace the idea of being sustainable.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
W(C : Will be an interaction with technology.
DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
W(C : Metric-Ganic was presented in the ‘Make It’ exhibition, held at the Faculty of Architecture and Design in February 2014, new Zealand. Not sure what, when and where I will make my next creations, but one day I would love to have my own exhibition held in Milan.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
W(C : In my own time, i spend a lot of time on design blogs.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
W(C : Clean, modernize.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
W(C : I currently live in New Zealand where there are cultural influence such as Maori Culture, it applies on art, architecture, language and livings. Great experiences.
DI: How do you work with companies?
W(C : Consulting with the person that can do the job best.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
W(C : You must have great communication with your client, and knowing what your client wants. That makes a great designer in a firm.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
W(C : Inspiration - Concepts - Mock up - Testing - Final.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
W(C : Lights fittings, Coffee table, Sculpture decorations, Book shelves, Bed side table
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
W(C : In one word for me, everyday is "meaningful"
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
W(C : I am still very young, in fact too young to answer.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
W(C : Positives : Best job ever! Negatives : Please get some sleeps
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
W(C : Crafts, Crafts, Crafts!
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
W(C : To think outside of box.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
W(C : Design - Cook - Eat - Design!
DI: What was your most important job experience?
W(C : Working in Con - Di design Co. Interior Design Firm
DI: Who are some of your clients?
W(C : My family are my biggest client, and people around the world who wish to renovate or decorate their house with reasonable budget.
DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
W(C : Contemporary Sculpture or Architecture.
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
W(C : I would like to go to Sweden to study master degree, when I can afford it.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
W(C : I mostly develop my design myself but when works with teams, I also enjoy it too.
DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
W(C : Yes, i am currently working on a apartment interior fittings with custom furniture project now, and it is now under construction, will be finish in May, please Contact me to check it out. It will be amazing!
