DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
Sana : I got into the design realm by coincident, and then I understood the power of self-expression through design and making.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
Sana : El_Masnad was my thesis design study. Now, I am in the path to discover ways and tools to bring more concept og living on the floor to reality.
DI: What is "design" for you?
Sana : Design is empowerment.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
Sana : I love to explore the concept of floor as living space and make more fun Lounge Carpets.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
Sana : I love to explore the concept of floor as living space and make more fun Lounge Carpets.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
Sana : I am interested in computational design. I am now advancing my scripting skills using the famous Grasshopper software for Algorithmic Aided Design. I was exploring a lot with it,and actually, the stitching pattern on El_Masnad is an artistic representation of graph of information. Specifically, it is about Saudi women.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
Sana : At 3:00 a.m. weather in my dreams or awake. 3am is when dreamers go to work.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
Sana : I try to focus on the Human-Centered aspects, and I try not to neglect, as much as possible, the environmental friendly aspects.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
Sana : Meditative
DI: What makes a design successful?
Sana : For my designs, I think when it can give back to community and culture.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
Sana : Appearance
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
Sana : Smart material and programming.
DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
Sana : The last one was Grand Design Exhibition Bologna Design Week. The next one, is Decofair in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
Sana : Nature, people, trends and Zaha Hadid.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
Sana : I live in L.A. a wonderful place, however, I grew up in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Awonderful place too. I loved it.
DI: How do you work with companies?
Sana : I haven’t yet.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Sana : Designers are beauty makers, so they can help you emphasize or your beauty in creative ways.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
Sana : 50% research, 25% thinking & 25% doing
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
Sana : My travelling bag, wii, my mascara packaging design, how my bed positioned so I can see the full moon at 10 p.m. every month
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
Sana : Not a day is similar to the next. there really an absence of routine.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
Sana : Do not stay up late, if you figured out how, teach me!
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Sana : Cons, Staying up late. Pros, finding your own independent voice.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
Sana : Stay up late, I don’t know any other way :-D
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
Sana : Research and analytical abilities.
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
Sana : 29.First, Sugar. Rhino, Grasshopper – Photoshop. Re-Thinking seating book by Peter Opsvic.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
Sana : I don’t, I just isolate myself from people.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
Sana : It depends.
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
Sana : “Which color should I pick for my bedroom?” ;-p
DI: Who are some of your clients?
Sana : Saudi Design Week, Dubai Design Week, Rushaid, Waed, Ashary and Art direction.
DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
Sana : The work that has a balance between the physical, like in making, and the intellectual, like in coming up with the concept.
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
Sana : Make more floor furniture.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
Sana : I work by myself, however, I look forward to meet other designer and team up with them in fun group projects.
DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
Sana : I am currently working on a small, but fun job. I am creating an interactive design for a Partí™ in an architectural conference to show case their patterning abilities.
