I am a final year design student pursuing Masters in Product Design from IIT Kanpur. I have worked on a diverse range of projects in national as well as International level. I have experienced work with people of different backgrounds and talents. I love to break the gap between design and engineering. And my technical background in mechanical engineering has always helped me in making feasible designs. I believe good designs are simple and intuitive solutions based on strong User research blended with innovation. My experience not just end with academic projects but also I have professional industrial experience from well reputed engineering as well as design industries. Designer Interview of Sachin N P:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

SNP : I love to break the gap between design and engineering. And my technical background in mechanical engineering has always helped me in making feasible designs. I believe good designs are simple and intuitive solutions based on strong User research blended with innovation.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

SNP : I am a final year design student pursuing Masters in Product Design from IIT Kanpur. I have worked on a diverse range of projects in national as well as International level. I have experienced work with people of different backgrounds and talents. I have professional industrial experience from well reputed engineering as well as design industries like UX Studio at Robert Bosch, India.

DI: What is "design" for you?

SNP : I believe design lies in everything that makes a user don't let think of its design. The design should be always like a fluid for a user that just flows flawlessly.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

SNP : I would like to work on products with social relevance, Home appliances, playing around with forms, furniture design.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

SNP : One design specifically close to my heart is ZO-e. ZO-e is designed to satisfy the growing needs of aesthetics and style, and she also perfectly fits into the existing traffic and transportation system.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

SNP : My creativity churns out whenever I notice that there is a necessity for a change in the way we interact with the real world.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

SNP : I am a person who believes that functionality is the most important aspect of any design. I feel if a product is not able to serve what it is meant to be, its a failure.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

SNP : I often possess an emotion very similar to a woman who has given birth to her baby after a long waiting.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

SNP : Functionality, User centric design, form factor.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

SNP : Designer has a huge responsibility over the society and the people. He actually has the ability to understand people and can communicate with the technological crowd. He stays as a bridge between people and technology which reflects over his designs

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

SNP : Design is eternal.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

SNP : I am from a background where culture is deep in our roots. I am from a country which has vast and diverse in culture tradition and emotion. Where else should a designer go for his inspiration?

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

SNP : Minimalism is my philosophy. I believe the best designs are one which needs no explanation.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

SNP : All the companies who actually follows intense user centric design process.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

SNP : Nail cutter, Cigarette box, perfume bottles, cafe racer bike collection

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

SNP : Keep it simple

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

SNP : Functionality follows form..

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

SNP : Keen Oberservation

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

SNP : Steadtler pencils

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

SNP : According to me design is not only about creativity and innovation but also is predominantly about failures, iterations and time management

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

SNP : An approx of three to four months depending on the functional complexity and learning.

DI: What was your most important job experience?

SNP : Working with Robert Bosch design studio.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

SNP : I love making things. From the very childhood, I keep making things and tinker around. I still remember, my mom telling about my and my screw driver and hammer which i always used to have with me. :)

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

SNP : Even though I do individual projects, I prefer working in team. It is very interesting to build upon one others idea, fight for the best idea. I really enjoy it. And I feel it as important because multiple opinions and perspectives sometime gives a different dimension to the design.

DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

SNP : I am right now working on making writing implements for the blind in which they can use the same device for languages and doing mathematical operations.
