Designer Interview of Michelle Sung:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
MS : I don't have a professional art and design background, but I love to learn and observe different things. I develop the art concepts with designers, and inspire them to make a concept to become a physical work. That's how our designs develop. For Taiwanese Aboriginal Masks (our awarded work), I got the idea to show the beauty and legacy of Taiwanese aboriginal cultures via facial masks. I did a lot of research about their tradition, the herbs they used, and ancient legends. I also searched many designers, and found the suitable person to work with. We worked out together for 6 months and made the concept become a work.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
MS : TenArt Biotech goes after the quality, safety, innovation, and fashion of personal-care products. Based in Taiwan, we have abundant agriculture, rich biodiversity, and ancient culture of indigenous people. With a focus on face, body, baby product, makeup and professional use formulations, we create some of the most cost effective, high quality and powerful products on the market. Providing world class services to up and coming businesses, large established brands, physicians, estheticians and other skin care professionals, we specialize in research and development, custom formulization, graphic design, manufacturing, package and delivery. We also add local elements into our products, and use eco-friendly ingredients to show the beauty and lavishness of Taiwanese culture.
DI: What is "design" for you?
MS : Design, as a kind of language, can convey messages and emotions. For me, a good design is an art work which can be understood easily and can belong to every person. That's why our design is i a form of personal care products. I hope people enjoy our works everyday and for every occasion.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
MS : Our company focus on personal care and baby products. I hope our design can be used everyday, and has meaning for our customers. I also like to add Taiwan's elements into our design. Taiwan is a small and beautiful island, with only 23 .5 million people as the population size. But we have very good industry, designers and ancient culture. I am so proud of being a Taiwanese, so I want to show the beauty of Taiwan in our design.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
MS : My most favorite design is "Taiwanese Aboriginal Masks".It shows the indigenous culture of Taiwan. It also looks fashionable and playful. Even you haven't been in Taiwan, you can still experience Taiwan via using the facial masks. It's just like a mini-cultural journey, and you can also perfect your skin at the same time.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
MS : The first thing is about the safety of the product. That's why I look for the natural ingredients and eco-friendly materials and use them in my design.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
MS : Eco-friendly and organic material.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
MS : I feel the most creative after I listen to a speech or join a meeting. I love to hear other people's experience sharing.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
MS : I love to add cultural elements into the design, that's why I did a lot of study to find out what can represent Taiwan, the lovely island I come from. I found the colours of Taiwan, and I found the local plants and stories. I used these local elements as a part of my design.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
MS : energetic and has a strong sense of mission.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
MS : Happy and warm
DI: What makes a design successful?
MS : A successful design can touch people. I hope my design can make people feel warm, and people are willing to use it.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
MS : I think a good design should be useful and easily to be understood. So the concept is the most important thing for a designer.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
MS : A designer should always think about the environment. That's why I insist to use eco-friendly materials in my design.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
MS : For me, the "green" products will become important and the designers should think about it. More and more consumers will only buy green products.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
MS : I read a lot of books, ranging from business, culture, history and arts. And I can always find inspiration from talking with people. so, I have friends from different fields and I can always learn from them.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
MS : I live in Taiwan. Cultural heritage always affects my design. All of my design concepts are originated from my culture. That's why I used Taiwan's aboriginal culture as elements in my design.
