Designer Interview of Pedevilla Architects:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

PA : We always wanted to become designers/architects. Creating an architectural office in 2005 was a milestone in the professional process.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

PA : We created in in 2005. Two brothers as CEO's. Dr. Arch. Armin Pedevilla & Dr. Arch. Alexander Pedevilla.

DI: What is "design" for you?

PA : Full time job.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

PA : We do architecture mostly. But do also interior design for our projects.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

PA : I changes and depends mostly with the clients.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

PA : It all kicked off with the design for a social center and a school.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

PA : We do a lot of plaster surfaces which vary on the location we are working. But we also do wood facades. At the interior we like straight white concrete the most.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

PA : The time we're in the office.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

PA : Location, client, costs & budget, visuals, geometry, volumetric.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

PA : We're very plaesed when we're designing.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

PA : Happy to see it turned out the way we wanted.

DI: What makes a design successful?

PA : Visaul satisfication.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

PA : Costs & Materiality, Visuals & realisation.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

PA : Great responsibility in front of the client. In a way were selling a product to someone.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

PA : It's evolving positively. But could be more recognisable from the public.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

PA : We do exhibition all the time, mostly international (wandering) exhibitions, which stay on the whole year round.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

PA : Insiration comes from the location we're working. But also from the surrounding. Most of our projects are in the mountain region of the dolomites, that gives a lot of impressions.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

PA : Traditional and regional modern interpretation.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

PA : We live in the middle of South Tyrol, a site which is commonly known for the mountain surrounding of the dolomites. The mountains have a strong effect on our work.

DI: How do you work with companies?

PA : Yes, we involve other companies in the process.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

PA : We would like everyone to do his part, commonly it is the thing that everyone does best.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

PA : The design comes to us mainly in the research process. We do a lot of analysis of the location, surrounding & materiality but also the clients wishes.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

PA : Chair, table, kitchen, pen, paper.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

PA : Work in progress, 10 hours.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

PA : Keep on pushing. Once your up, the clients will come to you.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

PA : Good thing is that you spend a lot of time with what you like to do most. Bad thing is that you spend a lot of time with what you like to do most.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

PA : There is none.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

PA : Drawing, visualisation, communication.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

PA : PC & pen.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

PA : Organisation is everything. But mostly we work until the last moment.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

PA : In Architecture that could take some years to be honest!

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

PA : What does it cost. How does it look like. How doeas it feel.

DI: What was your most important job experience?

PA : Winning a project competition is always a good thing. Winning a design price is also very nice indeed.

DI: Who are some of your clients?

PA : Mostly private clients, but also hotel owners and official institutions.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

PA : Pre design. Because then you do net feel rules at all. They come soon enough and straight afterwards.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

PA : Winning the A'Design award. Keep on designing.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

PA : We do work as a team. We are 5 designers in the office.

DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

PA : We deal with a lot of private investors at the moment. Therefore the appearence of each design is very different, but unique.
