Paulus Kristanto is independent graphic designer based in Indonesia, have passionate about design, photography, branding, layout, digital art, fashion, etc. He is a graduate of Petra Christian University, Majoring Visual Communication Design, Faculty of Art And Design. Since 2012, he has been working on some various project branding, graphic design, and photography. His projects main focus is to make and build the brand logo, visual identities, print design, packaging design, photography, digital art overseas & local clients. He has worked some clients from the corporate & personal business. His works given the opportunity to enter at international publication and he got some award also an international exhibition.

Designer Interview of Paulus Kristanto:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

PK : Since childhood, I've loved anything about of art such as drawing, painting, etc. In 2006, I took a lecture on visual communication design at Petra Christian University, Surabaya – East Java, Indonesia. That's what shaped me to be an artist or designer.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

PK : AIUEO Production is a brand of audiovisual production, promotional media and all about visual communication design. We are graphic design based in Indonesia, which has expertise in brand identity, photography, digital art, etc. We present as a creative solution that is effective in achieving the goals of the business.

DI: What is "design" for you?

PK : The design is not just what it looks like and feels. But that how it works.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

PK : • Branding • Logo Design • Print Design • Label & Packaging Design • Game Design • Graphic Design • Web Design • Illustration • Advertising • Photography

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

PK : Make and build the brand logo, visual identities because we learn about the concept and execution, both it's important to produce great design.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

PK : I designed company profile for Golden Life such as logo company, stationery design, brochure, product catalog, packaging design, printed design, etc.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

PK : For Designing, I love to use Adobe Creative Cloud.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

PK : I feel the most creative when the deadline is getting closer, or create a design with a comfortable place.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

PK : The visual design focuses on the aesthetics and its related materials by strategically implementing images, colors, fonts, and other elements.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

PK : Quiet, comfortable and just be happy.

DI: What makes a design successful?

PK : What makes a design successful is design must include innovative, functional, useful, aesthetic, intuitive, honest, long-lasting, user-oriented, unobtrusive, and valuable business.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

PK : I consider design as good.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

PK : Designers should be useful and inspiring.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

PK : With the rapid advancement of technology, it will also affect the design field that will continue to evolve.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

PK : Invitation 2015, "The Beauty of Nature," Brick Lane Gallery, LONDON/UNITED KINGDOM.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

PK : Inspiration can come from anywhere. Can be from the neighborhood, friends, other designers, or from social media. I feed my creativity by reading a book, article, join a community of designers/artists. My source of inspiration is reading books.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

PK : My design style is simplicity. Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance. For me, the design must be aesthetic.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

PK : I live in Indonesia. At least in my design, I incorporate some elements of Indonesian culture aim that Indonesia is better known in the worldwide.

DI: How do you work with companies?

PK : I was a freelance designer, but I also accept the job of several companies.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

PK : Companies should work with designers who understand the principles of design. Companies can choose a designer to select whether the designer understands ten rules of composition of design, have a right attitude, and anything else.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

PK : Collect information - Brainstorm and analyze ideas - Develop solution - Present your ideas to others for feedback - Improve on your design - Define the problem.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

PK : Lighting, Furniture design, Decorative design, Wall art, Kitchen accessories.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

PK : Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

PK : Do what you love, and love what you do.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

PK : Being a designer is a choice, and not everyone supports you to be designer.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

PK : 01. Find Your Focus. 02. Direct the Eye With Leading Lines. 03. Scale and Hierarchy. 04. Balance Out Your Elements. 05. Use Elements That Complement Each Other. 06. Boost (or Reduce) Your Contrast. 07. Repeat Elements of Your Design. 08. Don’t Forget the White Space. 09. Align Your Elements. 10. Divide Your Design Into Thirds.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

PK : Creativity.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

PK : I love to use Adobe Creative Cloud software. Other equipment is a drawing tool, colored pencils, watercolors, brushes, Wacom, and other devices that support my work.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

PK : Always divide my time between designing, time to exercise/workout, socialize with family and friends are essential.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

PK : Depending on what the project.

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

PK : How much it costs your design?

DI: What was your most important job experience?

PK : All job experience is essential but got A'Design Award is something memorable.

DI: Who are some of your clients?

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

PK : I love my job as a photographer because I can work and travel.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

PK : I want to create new works. Got a job opportunity from big companies and always be better.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

PK : I develop my design.
