Designer Interview of Vyri Junhan Yang:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

VJY : I was born in Beijing, China. After graduating from University of Science & Technology Beijing with a Bachelor Degree in Engineering, I worked as a Visual Designer and Site Architect at Municipal Commission of Tourism Development Haidian District Beijing for a while. I attended Academy of Art University with a MFA Degree in Fashion Design from 2014.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

VJY : I don't have one.

DI: What is "design" for you?

VJY : The tool to explain my mind.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

VJY : Everything i could do and interest in.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

VJY : I don't have the most favorite one, i like what i like.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

VJY : Follow the client's require.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

VJY : I don't know.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

VJY : Any time. I could inspire by the music movie painting and everything relate to it.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

VJY : I don't know.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

VJY : The same thing when i design.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

VJY : Nothing is bad. Every design work is way to communicate with the designer.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

VJY : I've never think about it.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

VJY : Good for human.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

VJY : I don't have one.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

VJY : Every thing from my life.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

VJY : My design represent the different design focuses, which are patterns and printing, draping, construction combination, fabric manipulation, and geometric variation. Although my focus is different, I have always been exploring my aesthetic style, and all of my inspirations are around blooming and death.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

VJY : I was grown up in Beijing and now i'm living in San Francisco.

DI: How do you work with companies?

VJY : I don't the experience in the design word.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

VJY : I don't know,

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

VJY : I tried to look at the design of multiple angles, and made some self-experiments. Each project I played with one point and combined the elements I learned before. The most challenge for me is thinking as the artist because my background would pull me away from the design world and involuntarily enter into a logical state of mind. I have to control myself in the art world and at this point when I’m looking back to my projects sometimes I feel there are tight state feelings. I try to find a relaxed state in the design process, combining some internal ideas and design elements. The final result is that I am satisfied.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

VJY : I have a lot, it's hard to explain.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

VJY : Every day is different for me.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

VJY : beautiful.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

VJY : Every one has their own way to develop the design.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

VJY : Sewing stuffs.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

VJY : I only know the deadline.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

VJY : It's hard to say.

DI: What was your most important job experience?

VJY : Worked in the IT company, the important part is my life relay on the salary.

DI: Who are some of your clients?

VJY : My friend and the people form the social party.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

VJY : Anything could cheer me up.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

VJY : I'm looking for that.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

VJY : I developed by myself.
