Designer Interview of Hisu Jeong:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

HJ : Since I was young, I’d like to paint and make something with my hands. Because of the experience, now I could successfully become a design. As a designer, I hope all the things become designs.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

HJ : We operate a tea company and we have a design institute with copywriter and director team inside.

DI: What is "design" for you?

HJ : It could be expressed that a new dress for a product to make it sold.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

HJ : I prefer environmental things good for the nature and people.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

HJ : Grand Comfort LC2 chair, it’s a comfortable chair as its name means ‘grand comfort’ . we everyday use chair whether it’s short or long. So I think that’s a great design for users’ comfort.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

HJ : We developed story-telling tea with great effort on the Royal Orchard.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

HJ : I most prefer drawing techniques with a concept and it’s the core technique of our brand.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

HJ : After meditation, I concentrate to make good creativity.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

HJ : Usage and concept suitable for the design.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

HJ : I design as I’m giving new dress.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

HJ : As I proceed design or watch my design actualized, I’m feeling happy and alive.

DI: What makes a design successful?

HJ : Retaining Original and commercial balance.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

HJ : I firstly consider the design is good for human or harmful for the nature.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

HJ : I have a responsibility to retain past things for the future.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

HJ : Definitely design can be more and more comfortable and simple and it will be developed in a direction of human and nature friendly way.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

HJ : The 2015 Korean Tour Product Exhibition was the last exhibition and will soon be seen as a new entry.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

HJ : I have many motivation from historical heritages and develop the motivation to my originality.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

HJ : My design approach is capturing the nature of a thing and connect past, present and the furue in a perspective. That’s my design style.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

HJ : Korean history and heritage motivate me in my idea and direction and made me realize that the nature never changes even though the time changes.

DI: How do you work with companies?

HJ : The owner and director of my company.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

HJ : Various experience building is important as well as designing sense.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

HJ : Propose, market research, making design concept, making drafts, edit and fix, completion.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

HJ : Chair, sofa, book, pottery and cosmetics.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

HJ : Two domains of time with my family and time in a job with my colleagues.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

HJ : Having Many experience and knowing history. They are great power for designing motivation.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

HJ : The positive aspect is having habits that looking things in various perspective and the negative point is I have to take a lot in my mind.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

HJ : Utilizing knowledge and insight properly.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

HJ : Making emotion to be effective output.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

HJ : Mac, illustrator and Photoshop

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

HJ : Usually I try to lead time. When I’m tired, take a rest, when motivated, work so I try to work naturally.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

HJ : It need From 2 weeks to 4 weeks.

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

HJ : It’s hard to except original questions like is it effective? Beautiful?

DI: What was your most important job experience?

HJ : Strong proposing power and concept matching with its nature.

DI: Who are some of your clients?

HJ : People who enjoys drinking tea or people who doesn’t enjoy much but still drinks on daily basis.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

HJ : I enjoy design work of that harmonizes people and environment.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

HJ : I am planning to design everyday product with decent convenience and fancifulness.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

HJ : Director and design developer.

DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

HJ : The chair I answered on 5th question.
