We, as the Designer Interviews ("DI") had the distinct pleasure and opportunity to interview award-winning, most creative and innovative Ajay Choudhary ("AC").
Ajay is currently working on eco mobility for developing countries. He is actively involved in Vehicle development and styling at Bajaj Auto limited design studio. He conducts his own research and methods to gain market insights. Ajay leads the role of product conceptualization and realization.

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
AC : I am Master's in transportation design from DSKISD India.
DI: What is "design" for you?
AC : Design means looking for right problems to solve. If we search for relevant problems to be solved that itself leads to great design story.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
AC : I like to work on design projects which look into future of products and services. Transportation products, digital devices and interaction projects excites me the most.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
AC : It will launched soon. Currently it is confidential.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
AC : Research phase is most part of design. This forms the backbone of any project. Investing time to understand problem and root cause is half the design
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
AC : Expressive, Design allows gives the sense of responsibility.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
AC : Newness, For me a design has to have unique sets of solutions to offer.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
AC : Designer will have hybrid roles in the future. We wont be merely idea creators or shape designers. We will take roles which dual in nature. May be like Interaction designer plus robotics engineer giving rise Robot interaction designer.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
AC : I live currently in India, Pune. It the educational capital of the country. Design in our country is more like ritual d It has more deeper value emotionally than physical. This also influences my design philosophy which has values like intelligent, sustainable and creative.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
AC : Companies should look at designer who are self-motivated and wanting to drive design process. Designers who are looking to work on next big ideas.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
AC : Refrigerator, Laptop, Broom, My Gundams and Art toys.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
AC : Be Bold, proactive and think crazy ideas.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
AC : I think as designers we have lot of tools and methods to propose new solutions. The problem starts when we get stuck into our own molds to design solutions.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
AC : Honest and offering relevant design solution
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
AC : Sketching, I feel designer must acquire the skill not only think but also to document design problems.
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
AC : I use mostly Adobe photoshop, Autodesk Maya and Autodesk Alias for design conceptualization and development. To keep my mental visual library updated i curate pinterest boards. I also conduct master class courses at design college to keep my motivation high.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
AC : Yes it is, I keep sandbox time to update myself with new tools and methods to make my design work fast. Design work has no boundary when design asks for more time, it is better to give it.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
AC : It depends on the product. Typically transportation product takes one to one and half years design phase. This includes research, sketching, design development in CAD and clay.
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
AC : How i stay creative is the question asked by people. I ask them to observe things around and look for design problems. If you spend little time to look crazy solutions that keeps your brain healthy.
DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
AC : I enjoy design challenges which ulterior in nature. Pushing boundaries of the existing products.
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
AC : I am interested to work on autonomous car interaction with users and its surroundings. Also on interior design experience on the same.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
AC : I work individually on concept phase. However strengths of my designs come when whole team jumps into it.
