Designer Interview of Etem Deniz Temucin:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
EDT : Because almost my entire family are artist, designer or architect so it can be said that I didn’t see any other proffesion. I was interested in social sciences when I was in high school but eventually that’s the point that I came now.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
EDT : I am still not working for any company. I am still educating in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University.
DI: What is "design" for you?
EDT : Creating manufactured artwork with mutual effort.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
EDT : I like to design small objects. I think that there is a huge difference between objects that people like to show in their living areas and objects that which they entered into. For example cars, boats, etc.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
EDT : Raymond Loewys pencil sharpener. I think forcing an object that much for the trend which he adopts shows a designers sagacity. But this is just an example. How can say that this one is my favorite whilw there the design history is full of great objects.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
EDT : I designed a closet when i was intern, unfortunately it was never manufactured.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
EDT : I like using fabric materials in my products. It is definitely warm material to use.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
EDT : When i am stressed.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
EDT : İ focused on to not make harm to anyone or anything.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
EDT : İ feel more curious. While i was creating a product, there can be a difference between how i designed the product in my mind at first and the product which i designed end up with.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
EDT : I feel relieved.
DI: What makes a design successful?
EDT : In my opinion, a product which is safe for anyone even though it’s not selling good or doesn’t liked by someone is still successful.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
EDT : If a product make harm to itself or anyone who is using it I judged that an insufficient product.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
EDT : In my point of view, using minimum material sources and using these sources with minimum pollution and providing maximum benefits with minimum loss.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
EDT : It is obvious that we are going to use high technology in the future however it has to be always made by human beings.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
EDT : The most important criteria which is affecting me to create a product are biomimicry and iconic objects. (hourglass, telescope etc.) Besides that listening expectations of people also affecting me to realized my design.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
EDT : I am trying to blend modernist style and oriantel style. I am also searching an innovator, elegant and exotic design language. Generally, ı am trying to get main shapes of my products from nature itself and iconic objects.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
EDT : I live in Turkey, My countrie’s designing culture developed by old civilizations such as Hittite, Byzantium, Ottoman, etc. I can easily say that Turkey has a great design potential however It has no unique design culture yet.
DI: How do you work with companies?
EDT : I have never worked in a design company before.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
EDT : It always starts with a blank paper. I like sketching without asking anything to anyone and without researching. After the researching process I am taking opinions of target customers, and then I started to add things into my first sketches.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
EDT : Logitech g502 mouse ('cause of ergonomy), Casio sgw-100-1v watch, Ibanez gio guitar, Hilti nail set case, Wacom Sylus stand.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
EDT : As a young designer, I haven’t seen myself in that level to give wisdom.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
EDT : Brain of a designer always remains fresh however the body always rebels.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
EDT : In my point of view the golden rule is “never harm to anyone or anything.”
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
EDT : Graphic tablet, Adobe photoshop, Rhinoceros, Keyshot, Fusion 360, Autocad and blank paper. My inspiration usually come from city itself and history. I can’t find inspiration from magazines or etc.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
EDT : There is no time limitation in my working hours right now. I always time for working so it is hard to make an inference for that. However, I can easily say that working at nights is the best option for me right now.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
EDT : It depends on projects. Some of them can be finished in one week, some of them can be finished in four months.
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
EDT : What are you going to be after you graduated from university?
DI: What was your most important job experience?
EDT : I haven’t had an important work experience yet.
DI: Who are some of your clients?
EDT : I haven’t had a client yet.
DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
EDT : I like to design objects that people can wear. Also I like to design objects that people want to put it into their houses. I believe that these kind of objects makes people to internalize.
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
EDT : I want to be a part of a company which designs small objects.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
EDT : I always worked with my own until today but I want to work with a team which including engineers, designers, advertisers, etc.
