Designer Interview of Kristina Sviderskaite:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

KS : My start of career is very simple. To be a designer was my childhood dream. I have finished fashion design studies in Villnius Academy of Arts, where I have got bachelor and master degrees.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

KS : My fashion studio works about 4 years. After graduation I started work on my own projects. I create fashions collections, participate in fashion events and competitions, have different experience with clients.

DI: What is "design" for you?

KS : "Design" for me is my lifestyle, my passion, my creative way to live.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

KS : At the moment the main area of my design is womenswear, but I would like to create more for men.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

KS : I think the most favorite deisgn - Transformer dress. It is dress, which can be wearable in different ways.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

KS : I think it was a dress for masive production

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

KS : I really like to used tricot or thin fabrics such as coat wool.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

KS : I feel most creative after travels, good book's reading, insprirating meetings, walkings in forest or city.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

KS : I think I focus on aestetics of design and function both

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

KS : I fell joy, calm and concentration when I am designing

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

KS : It is really strong feeling of joy and fulfilment.

DI: What makes a design successful?

KS : I think good and succesful design should have these main aspects: aestetics, function and idea-message.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

KS : I think firstly I saw good aspects, because I am just a positive human

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

KS : I think every designer should have a massage for society, also she/he should take responsibilieties about responsible use. Design has very important role in society. It can improve different areas, functions, can help people comunicate, can give more comfort, pleasure.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

KS : I think in the future design could have more quality, also have connections with society, human and global problems especially.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

KS : My last exhibition was on September, 2016 in Warshaw fashion week. I would like to have my next exhibition in autumn of 2017.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

KS : My inspirations come from society, comunication, nature, travels, books. I feed my craetivity using mindfulness practice and also having rest and relax enough.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

KS : I think I could describe my design as minimlistic. The mani reason of this is my love of simplicity and seeing beauty in simple things. Also I can except fabrics and colors used in my deisign. I like to match different textures and surface, Also all details should have their own function. And the main characteristics - all clothes are transformable.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

KS : I live in Vilnius, Lithuania. Of course, I have an impact - this is small cosy country with big history, beautifull nature and creative people. I think, my country gives my a lot of opportunities, also there are a lot of new areas, which are free yet. Of course, the weakness of small country - we dont have a big design or fashion industry.

DI: How do you work with companies?

KS : I colloborate with one comapny, which produce tricot fabrics.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

KS : Firstly, they should choose a designer accordingly designer's style. And companies should give a space to create enough

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

KS : Design process starts in my head, when I am carying ideas for long or shiort time. Then - searching for information, prototypes if it is needed, sketching, making layouts and prototypes, fitting, choosing fabrics, making an item, fitting, testing, decisions ind conclusions.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

KS : Table, stairs, armchair, teapot, rossete.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

KS : I start my morning with cup of tea and having calm atmosfere. Then I go to the studio and on the way I can think about the works of day. In the studio I make "to do" list and start to work - searching and collecting inspirational things, sketching, searching information for project, sewing, making layouts, responding emails, having meatings with clients, having fittings and etc.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

KS : I could just say - believe in yourself! This is the way for other people to start believing in you.Also, spend a lot of time in practising, learining and never give ip.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

KS : Positives - observation, sensitivity to visual things, knowing and understanding what is good and tasteful design. Negatives - observing and not tasteful things, which are like poison for eyes.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

KS : Less is more

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

KS : Patience, selfconfidence, creativeness, productivness, socialization

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

KS : I am using very simple equipment - basic measures, paper, manequine, sewing mashine, computer and etc. Also I used different books, blogs, websites for learning and inspirations.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

KS : I think the main thing to help manage time is to have "to to" list and timetable

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

KS : Mostly it takes 1-3 months

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

KS : What is your inspiration?

DI: What was your most important job experience?

KS : I think it was practice at the fashion design studio.

DI: Who are some of your clients?

KS : People from craetive industry, for example contemproary dance.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

KS : I enjoy sketching and making makets.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

KS : I would like to have an international career: show my collections in fashion weeks, participate in different showrooms, competitions, also have my own succesfull fashion studio - company.The next step for me will be fashion collection for men

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

KS : I develop my design myself

DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

KS : Now I am working on scene costumes for contemproary dance play. It is new experience and I am excited about it
