DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
MF : It is the curiosity that, as a child, has led me to understand how various arts have been built. My cultural activity and my undergraduate studies in industrial design have pushed me in the direction of my profession.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
MF : In 1994 establish the design firm “DISEGNO”, that will become, in 1997, the company Massimo Facchinetti designer by Prototipi s.a.s., being interested in industrial consultancy and realisation of projects in the field of design. The study deals with 360° Design : from pin to car. Useful Design: pursue the Italian tradition to get utility in the product. Environmental design: pursue the integration between artefacts and context micro and macro environmental, using in the right way colors and materials. Design For All: always give the right consideration the final user, endorsing the positive aspects of the concept of customization, for a suitable product for all without distinction. Eco-friendly Design: decarbosination of the product / service, with the goal of the complete quality and of the energetic benefit in the global process.
DI: What is "design" for you?
MF : The industrial product reproducible for everyone
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
MF : The development of complex objects
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
MF : It's the design that solves a problem
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
MF : The waste bin "Synthesis" for Athena Urban Furniture
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
MF : The use of modelable materials that can be accommodated in any form, by molding
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
MF : When motivated by the end goal
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
MF : The form that can communicate the use, which can express what is the object
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
MF : The thrill of creating something new
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
MF : The greatest satisfaction is to see a project become reality
DI: What makes a design successful?
MF : The awareness that products can really serve more than pleasure
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
MF : It must be first of all useful, be feasible and finally combine functionality and design
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
MF : Responsibility to respect the environment. No, too easy ... I always say that I want to design in total quality
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
MF : Design for me is the modern evolution of what is already there
DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
MF : The last exhibition of my projects was held in the MACS 2013 exhibition, held in Milan, in the Tortona area
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
MF : From nature! I think there is already everything in nature: we just have to recover it
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
MF : Easy style. Simplicity is the key to the product
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
MF : I live in Italy. This leads to difficulties in understanding the value added to the companies
DI: How do you work with companies?
MF : It is difficult to relate to our work and, therefore, to represent our competences
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
MF : To believe more in designers and their skills, to accept the challenge to the new
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
MF : It's very simple: research, analysis, comparison, concept
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
MF : Home, work, sport, home
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
MF : To believe in their ideas, after studying the subject very much
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
MF : The positive side is that it is a good job. Negative: it's a little remunerated
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
MF : Always insist. Change the difficultly into opportunities
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
MF : Culture in general. All
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
MF : The most important is the handmade design. Then everything else
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
MF : I devote time to research and comparison
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
MF : It ranges from a few hours to months: it depends on the product
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
MF : That's a little cost
DI: What was your most important job experience?
MF : The project of a vertical rotating kitchen, presents at the Salone del Mobile in Milan
DI: Who are some of your clients?
