Designer Interview of Asbjoerk Stanly Mogensen:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
ASM : I have always wanted to become a designer. In my younger years i was an art Director at the biggest advertising company in Denmark.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
ASM : We are specialist in designing electric bicycles and electric vehicles in generel.
DI: What is "design" for you?
ASM : When you make a very complex idea to a very simple product to use. It must me intuitive to use. It must look good.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
ASM : Electric bicycles. I like to use a holistic design approach. Make as much integration as possible.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
ASM : My most favourite design is the carQon electric cargo bikes for families. It is a true replacement for a small car and it brings commuting on a bicycle into the next century. www.carqonbike.com
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
ASM : A HiFi peaker.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
ASM : When i have my paper and pen in front of me.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
ASM : Definitely integration of parts. I want to have a holistic design approach to all i do.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
ASM : Happiness definitely
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
ASM : Excitement
DI: What makes a design successful?
ASM : The usage and the looks.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
ASM : For sure this will have to be how it looks. Firs a good design needs to talk to your eyes and heart then next to your brain.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
ASM : It is a very important point. We as designers are responsible for making a better society and environment.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
ASM : The future of design involves very much the end consumers. I believe in individualisation where the end consumer takes part in the final design
DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
ASM : My last show was Taipei Cycle show in March 2017. My next show will be Shanghai cycle show in may 2017
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
ASM : The nature and a good walk along the coast line of Denmark is my inspiration
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
ASM : What describes my design is always the holistic design approach.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
ASM : I live in Denmark near the sea. Denmark has a culture for simple clean looking designs. Inspired by the nature and honesty to choice of materials.
DI: How do you work with companies?
ASM : I like to work in teams. A good idea can come from anyone.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
ASM : The company must let the designer be bold and brave. On the other hand, the designer needs to be very good in argumentation and presentation when the designer presents the final result
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
ASM : I start by making good old fashion sketches. Then the finalisation process begins after that using 3D making and at the end good professional renderings for the final presentation. Sometimes also prototype making.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
ASM : Our curved TV. Our Nespresso coffee machine. Our B&O HiFi. Our Bose earphones and all our Mac items.
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
ASM : I get up 5 o clock. Then i start talking with vendors from Asia. During the day i start the team work with my employees. Talks with clients. Meetings etc. But also i am a "hands on guy" I dont mind getting my hands dirty in the prototype workshop. Actually i love that discipline. Often i end my days at the office arround 19.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
ASM : Belive in your self. But most important, be a team player. Share your awards with your team members. make verybody feel special. Be good.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
ASM : For a creative person like myself i could not find a better position.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
ASM : Be brave and believe in your self - like Mr. Henry Ford said: "If i had asked the clients we would only have had faster horses"
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
ASM : The skill to think totally out of the box
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
ASM : Pen and paper, Solidworks, key shot, photoshop, Illustrator etc.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
ASM : I use my team to reach my goals. Team work is everything in design.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
ASM : This very much depends on the complexity of the task.
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
ASM : How did you come up with that idea ?
DI: What was your most important job experience?
ASM : I can not pick one before the other.
DI: Who are some of your clients?
ASM : Pininfarina, IKEA, Coop, Accell Group brands and many automotive companies.
DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
ASM : From the very beginning of a process - pen and paper
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
ASM : To make a new design studio in the balkan countries.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
ASM : I work in teams only.
DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
ASM : Soon to be announced ;-) I can tell i work on some new E-vehicles ... ;-)
