Designer Interview of Francesca Pucciarini:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

FP : I attended the "Bernardino di Betto" art institute of Perugia, then I studied industrial design at the University of Roma Sapienza. I am currently attending the master's degree in Product Design for Innovation at the Politecnico di Milano.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

FP : I am interested in traditional craftsmanship, in the various processes of the wood, but also in innovations such as the digital fabrication phenomenon and the possible combination between tradition and new technologies.

DI: What makes a design successful?

FP : A design is successful when, looking at the object, it makes you think that no form or technical solution could work better than the one choosed.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

FP : I am Italian and I recognize that the culture of Italian design has a big influence on my designs. I think it's a good thing for a designer to transmit the values of his own culture. Italy carries on an important tradition in the world of design, however, it is often difficult for a young designer, when he works outside big cities like Milan, to find great job opportunities.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

FP : First of all I analyze the brief for visualize possible preliminary ideas. Then it is important to do a specific research on what has been already done and how. After this analysis, I wonder how innovation can be done, through the formal study, the choice of the material or of the production process,or through the attribution of a new symbolic meaning.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

FP : The Olivetti Lettera 22 I bought some years ago; The Neapolitan moka found in my uncle's home; An old hand-decorated Umbrian ceramic; The Gramophone with the famous "His Master's voice" logo; A wooden centerpiece inspired by the figure of Pinocchio that I designed years ago.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

FP : I use the typical software for three-dimensional modeling, graphics and post-production. But I think it is important to design starting from freehand drawing and the use of handmade prototype. To find inspiration I like to look at different areas, distant from product design, through websites and books that talk about other subjects and that can make me new and fresh ideas.

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

FP : Which type of object I design. Usually people don't understand that a designer can work in many different field.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

FP : In the next months I will get my master's degree in product design for innovation at the Politecnico of Milan. Then I would like to move abroad or around Italy looking for a new work experience in professional studios or starting some personal projects.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

FP : In the past I have worked both in team both individually. I sincerely prefer to work with other people, I find it more challenging. More minds involved in the same project are able to develop more concrete ideas.

DI: How can people contact you?

FP : My personal email is francesca.pucciarini@outlook.com
