Designer Interview of Omid Rouhani:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
OR : I was inspired by my uncle who is a practicing architect. Since childhood is would always push me to think out of the box.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
OR : Omid Rouhani Architectural Design is an architectural office with branches in Dubai, UAE and Belgrade, Serbia.
DI: What is "design" for you?
OR : Design is the ability to make life better, both aesthetically and practically.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
OR : A spiral staircase.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
OR : When I have a client whose is willing to explore new ideas.
DI: What makes a design successful?
OR : The perfect balance between creativity and practicality.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
OR : My designs are modern but always take into consideration passive environmental solutions which have originated from vernacular buildings.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
OR : I live in Dubai and for sure the local vernacular architecture has effected my designs.
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
OR : My life is complicated. Being a full time faculty and a principal of design practice I never have a dull moment. I can start from teaching in a design studio and end up on site arguing with a contractor.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
OR : Dream Big and never get influence by chicken littles in your life.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
OR : My Franklin Covey planner. I will be lost with our it.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
OR : Good design is always a bi product of group work. Either between client and designer or amongst the design team.
