Designer Interview of Yao Wu:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

YW : I am engaged in Teaching Industrial Design in a university in china. I like this job very much. I think the industrial designer is a cool job. He is an inventor. You can design everything you like.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

YW : My studio is very close to the city, because the city needs it. We are not just industrial design, in fact, graphic design, animation and packaging design, we have to do

DI: What is "design" for you?

YW : I think it should be the way to solve the problem. For a long time, we have been engaged in the improvement of the product design, and I hope these products will bring better life experience. This kind of work is very interesting.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

YW : Product design, toy design, and some daily necessities design

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

YW : Last year, we designed a earpick, it not metal, it is very safe, style is also very elegant, I love a lady in his ear, we very love.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

YW : A company in Shenzhen engaged in the design of TV sets. That should be my earliest product design.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

YW : No special material, I think, basically as long as I need to like.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

YW : Ha ha, it should be miss ear.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

YW : Basically, I do everything, but I usually do a lot of work on creative ideas in general. For example, in many cases, I was the first to propose solutions even if they weren't the best. But it needs someone to do it.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

YW : I think design is a very interesting job, and creative process is often very exciting.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

YW : In fact, every completed a design works, are very exciting things. Of course, personally, I think the process is also very important, because we don't just need a good result, the process is very important.

DI: What makes a design successful?

YW : Communicating with our customers is the most important thing.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

YW : Modern China is different from the traditional ones. We are more interested in the functions of our times, so I think it is more important to design the functions in the present situation and function than to look good.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

YW : In my opinion, the difference between a designer and an artist is that the artist usually creates for himself, and the designer needs to think for others, so the designer is responsible for the society. It's very important.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

YW : Ha ha, modern society has become very fast, technology is different every day, I think the design of the future should be popular, right?

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

YW : Recently, the works were exhibited in Milan, and in November there was another in Hangzhou.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

YW : We often say that design comes from life, and I think that's quite right. Only when we find problems in life, we have the chance to create. So I think designers need to know how to live very well.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

YW : As far as I'm concerned, I like simple products. In fact, that doesn't mean I'm rejecting traditional decorations. I used to study the design of classical furniture. It's very useful. Chinese said: "I think we should accumulate steadily, to learn to do subtraction.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

YW : China is a country with a long history and culture. It has a long history and culture, and every designer benefits from it.

DI: How do you work with companies?

YW : It's just work. I'm glad you enjoyed it。

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

YW : I often tell my students that grades are not the most important things. It is important to have ideas and actions. I think it's a basic quality for designers.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

YW : Usually thinking for a long time, or doing a lot of research, and in fact, a lot of time, inspiration is the most important

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

YW : A work I have designed for my daughter is now taking part in the red dot award. I feel great!

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

YW : In school, it is basically in class, which leads students to participate in some activities. That's it。

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

YW : The foundation must be better, even if you are a genius. We must pay attention to the Internet age, this will affect all of our design.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

YW : Industrial designers are affected by the development of the surrounding industries, and of course, the development is very fast, and I think the impact will be smaller.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

YW : Availability, availability.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

YW : Innovative thinking, and the ability to express.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

YW : Designers are really busy, and they don't have much free time. I usually work late into the night.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

YW : There is no standard, sometimes very soon, and sometimes it takes a long time.

YW : Working in a very famous household appliance company in shenzhen, the time is very short, but it has a great influence on me.

YW : Toy design is an interesting professional, young and energetic.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

YW : I am now a government design consultant in Wenzhou, hoping to promote the development of the entire design industry.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

YW : I'd like to have both, but now I'd like to do my own product.
