We, as the Designer Interviews ("DI") had the distinct pleasure and opportunity to interview award-winning, most creative and innovative Hyungjun Koo ("HK").
Hyungjun Koo is a student designer in Korea, co - founder of studio JUNE. He is studying Industrial Design at Kookmin University(Senior student) in republic of korea. His design motto is a meaningful design. Design services offered by KOO are planning an ecosystem about his users & clients with using his designed products and service. DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
HK : I want to design products and services that communicating and Sympathizing with people.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
HK : I'm just a student designer, so my experience isn't enough to say that.
DI: What is "design" for you?
HK : Design is information that construct the shape and mean.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
HK : Sketch is most powerful and meaningful communication tool I think.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
HK : Braun's home appliance. Such as speaker, radio etc..
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
HK : I'm just a student designer, so my experience isn't enough to say that.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
HK : I like fabric most nowadays. but I'll use another material at next project, such as stainless-steel.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
HK : Everytime I designing.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
HK : User's using scene.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
HK : Happy, but exhaust.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
HK : That's resource of my design works.
DI: What makes a design successful?
HK : Deep think and constant development.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
HK : Matching about the inspiration of design to the final design outfit.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
HK : Designers should think about society and nature as much as possible. Because we are inventors who consume many resources.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
HK : Design is not just face of device, but also the value of service.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
HK : My design motivation is came from anywhere, anytime in my life. If not, My design will be the same thing than others.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
HK : I live in Seoul, south korea. and it is very dynamic city. so it gives me a lot of inspiration.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
HK : I think about the using process about my design. It is most important thing because product is used by users.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
HK : Laptop, desktop, TV, chair and desk.
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
HK : Have freely mind and think about users are most important thing.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
HK : A constant thinking is most meaningful thing of young designer, I think.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
HK : Designer is so hard worker, but it is very meaningful job I think.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
HK : User experience is the golden rule in my design.
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
HK : Shape designing ability is the most important thing.
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
HK : I drew some sketches from my shape inspirations and make 3D modeling & rendering with rhino 3D & Keyshots. At last, I edited images using a photoshops.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
HK : I plan a very small part about my project.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
HK : Usually 1 ~ 3 months.
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
HK : "What is a design, in your opinion?" is the most frequently question for me.
DI: What was your most important job experience?
HK : Design project experience with world class company, such as Samsung electronics & LG etc.
DI: Who are some of your clients?
HK : I'm just student now, but few years later, I'll do my design for many people and companies.
DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
HK : My most enjoy type of design is future electronic concept devices. Because I like products such as smart phones, laptop computers, and I want to design their futuristic form factor.
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
HK : I planning new project about artificial intelligent products. Please watching and expecting my future works.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
HK : It depends on the situation. But team project is more meaningful than doing alone, so I like team play more.
DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
HK : I'm designing about AI speaker, like Amazon echo.
