DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

MCFC : I design from chopstick restraints to architecture.I design everything related to everyday life.I also run the shop selling my designed products.

DI: What is "design" for you?

MCFC : Design things needed for everyday life, beautifully and emotionally.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

MCFC : I like to make a design mechanism, not a form

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

MCFC : R+R chair.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

MCFC : When the idea pop up in my mind

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

MCFC : Whether the product suit the place where it is placed.Whether the products will not give the weird impression.That is I do care the most.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

MCFC : Excitement after hardship

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

MCFC : I prioritize the procedure of design, so when the design are realized, I am rather calm

DI: What makes a design successful?

MCFC : You will be able to succeed if you can keep making it.So it is important to create such environment

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

MCFC : I believe emotion is most important.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

MCFC : It is not about whether you are a designer.Each member of collaborators must be conscious about society and environmentand recognize the differences that makes better society and environment.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

MCFC : I don’t think evolving.It is changing.I don’t know the future of design.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

MCFC : I and Miyazaki Chair Factory are planning to exhibit Salone del Mobile 2019 and ICFF in NY.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

MCFC : The origin of creation for me is based on the technique and spirit of the collaborator.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

MCFC : I prepare the environment to make products while I am developing it. Thus I make the product which isn't sold well at first, but eventually the product becomes long seller.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

MCFC : I base on the suburb of Tokyo.Japanese culture affect a lot to my work.

DI: How do you work with companies?

MCFC : I work with rather small local companies.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

MCFC : Japanese companies don’t pay attention to choose designers.Since we can choose what we want to eat at the restaurant, they should care about choosing designer.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

MCFC : 1. Exchange opinions with collaborator(communication)2.Investigate what technique the collaborator can offer and the environment/facilities3. Confirm how the collaborator think4. Propose design idea

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

MCFC : Villa Savoye by Le Corbusier, AKARI by Isamu Noguchi, Issei Miyake clothes, Stabilo's felt-tip pen and Peter Zumthor's chapel

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

MCFC : It depens on the day.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

MCFC : Positive thing is if the result is good, that made people happy.Negative thing is sometimes people think I am dubious person.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

MCFC : I believe I have to design with someone and I should not design without the order.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

MCFC : To be able to think in a partner’s position.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

MCFC : Felt-tip pen, colored pensils and triangular scale.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

MCFC : I save the time without answering the calls for 2days in every week.Thus I can concentrate on designing.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

MCFC : It depends and it might be 3 days or can be 5 years.

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

MCFC : What I like the most in my work.

DI: What was your most important job experience?

MCFC : The workshop style of collaboration with Miyazaki Chair Factory and Table kobo KiKi in Tokushima prefecture.We have been working together with this style for last 20 years.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

MCFC : I enjoy housing design the most.There are always users in front of me and I can communicate with them while designing.

DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

MCFC : New chair with Miyazaki Chair Factory.
