Designer Interview of Dot 3:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

D3 : I am an Interior designer by discipline, I loved it actually but I take an interest in many things. I was a maths student in my early years in high school actually and I still remember in year 8, I got a D- from my art teacher. At 17, I knew but was very scared however with a leap of faith and a friend's encouragement I chose. It's really right for me but I probably would have said the same thing if I had ended up being a photographer or a chef something. As long as I get to have ideas I'm good.

DI: What is "design" for you?

D3 : It's balancing and subtracting.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

D3 : I like interior, furniture and jewelry. I think in general, something I can realize and touch. For example I don't have the same high when I think about graphics and multimedia.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

D3 : I don't know if there's a favorite.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

D3 : A sales center if you don't count a tiny bar.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

D3 : No rules there I think but in general after a jog.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

D3 : Depends on the project

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

D3 : It's all linked. The balance of these aspects.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

D3 : Is somebody supposed to really know the answer to the future of design? I don't.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

D3 : I'm painting a lot recently. I'll tell you if I have one. If ever.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

D3 : Changes all the time and hopefully continues to.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

D3 : Right now I live in Beijing

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

D3 : I think, I draw, I get stuck, I leave it, sleep, run walk cook or whatever and start again.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

D3 : Not really, it changes all the time. The only constant the last few years is either running or meditating.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

D3 : None. Wait, maybe this. After about after 3/4 years working as a designer, I noticed that for most projects whatever I'm working on I usually do arrive at a point when I feel it's the right solution. Not think but feel and if I don't get there I usually don't stop.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

D3 : The ability to see it in your head and hopefully feel it.

DI: How can people contact you?

D3 : dot3jewelry.com. On most social media @dot3jewelry except on Linkedin. Just Hong Tran or email me at hong.tran@dot3jewelry.com. Do get in touch. Especially if you are a teenager unsure about design and too scared to ask questions, I'll get back to you.
