Living in Argentina for many years, after many years of impact with the diverse cultures of South America, let the designer know how to see the dialogue between people and the land and nature, and listen to the voice of the mountains and the sea. The so-called best design or style in the designers mind is to truly understand design and even human nature. The sustainable coexistence of the owner, the space and the environment is what makes the space have depth and meaning. Designer Interview of Fabio Su:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
FS : I have loved drawing since I was a kid, enthusiasm for painting and have strong feeling of natural beauty. Observing nature changed grain, color, temperature, and variation of light-shadow by season is what I like.when I get into painting, I always neglect hustle and bustle around me. I know one day I will become a designer because it is my dream.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
FS : Our company is a delicate workshop, it is not only a company but also a family, we don’t have restricted work time, we support and inspire each other. This work ambiance is what I like.
DI: What is "design" for you?
FS : For me, design is like breathing. All the inspiration given by nature, every streak and light-shadow in nature is so beautiful and free. This is the best design!
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
FS : I like the opus with streak and combines with local culture.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
FS : I like the designs which have temperature, full of creativity and culture materials. Such as, the opus from Antoni Gaudi. The design full of his respect to nature and amazing industrial arts technology. His design is perfectly combining industrial arts and nature which has great influence of architecture and design concept. He once said:straight belongs to human and curve belongs to god. Learning from nature is the summit of designers.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
FS : My first design for company is the working environment which can make every staff feel comfortable and free when they are working.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
FS : My favorite material is from nature, without heavy process. Such as, logs, fair-faces concrete, and steel. I often refer a different region of design. For example, floriculture, plane, stage, traditional culture, and industry design. Creativity comes from different kind of design, I very like to combine traditional techniques with modern design and expect to pass on the traditional techniques to the latest opus.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
FS : When I am traveling or even just walking on the street, every new things can inspire me.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
FS : I believe design is just a processing. We should focus on passing the traditional techniques and try hard to achieve eco friendly.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
FS : When I am designing, I always think about how to make my design more funny and close to spirit. Passing though challenges makes my design with more personal style.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
FS : Very complicated, it is like overcome a new challenge and achieve to the new milestone.
DI: What makes a design successful?
FS : Communicate with customer is the basic part for successful design. After fully realizing what customer wants, we will vitalize design with style and it will become a perfect opus.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
FS : For all design, the basic part is practical use, function, and coordination. You can not make a good design without any of this.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
FS : A great designer has heavy duties of society and environment. An excellent technique can treat nature well and a great idea is the best social education.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
FS : Nowadays, science and technology become more and more flourishing and everything change so fast. This phenomenon makes design difficult to predict. I believe design will include all domains in the future and brand a new type of design.
DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
FS : I hope my next exhibition could be held in Taiwan at 2020.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
FS : My inspiration comes from everywhere in life. Everything surround us is the best resource. Such as, the streak of branch and the grain of rock. Nature is our best inspiration and keep the sense to everything is also a good way to cultivate your creativity.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
FS : My style is diversification but also stable. I will change my style base on the case. An excellent designer shouldn’t self limit but open the mind to take challenges.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
FS : I was born in Taiwan and lived in Argentina for 15 years. Now I am living in Taiwan. These experiences make my design contain different kind of country culture and more multi-variant.
DI: How do you work with companies?
FS : Everyone is on a boat. We work hard together and go forward together.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
FS : We have a definite mode and terms of cooperation with designers. Without indistinct relationship, we prefer stable cooperation and make everyone has the same goal. We always look for designers who have excellent personality and design concept. We believe a good personality will affect every opus and the core of company.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
FS : Design is a lengthy and lonely road. I often facing challenges and painfulness. This experience makes me grow up, it is a necessary course which every design should have. The bitter process leads to the sweet fruits.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
FS : Human statue, log conference table, bronze sculpture of Buddha, glass ornaments, iron teapot.
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
FS : I always take my kids to school at 7 o’clock then start to work at 9 o’clock. After a busy period, I will get off work and take kids back home. Enjoy a happiness time with my family.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
FS : Keep taking challenges and never restrict yourself. The most important is having enthusiasm.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
FS : Engage in design can train you to an excellent communicator, but because of heavy brainstorming, sometimes I was tired of communicating with other people after work.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
FS : To listen the sound of mountain and sea. Focus on the dialogs talked by people.
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
FS : The concept of design, the using of software, knowledge of materials, and ability of negotiations.
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
FS : Software such as, Cad, SketchUp, Lumion and SUPodium. Hardware such as, computer, measuring tools, tool box and magazines. Inspiration comes from everywhere such as, products in the market, cloud and mountain. Everything can be the source of creativity.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
FS : This question is what makes me most painful , time is never enough to me.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
FS : About one month to two years. It depend on the design scale.
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
FS : The design style and price.
DI: What was your most important job experience?
FS : To design my residence and office, because it contains a lot of experimental concept and techniques. It makes me under high pressure.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
FS : Concise and profundity design. This type of design have life and emotion.
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
FS : Because of the growing environment, I have the ability to combine east and west culture. I plan to let west world understand more about graceful east and let west world understand the aesthetics about west culture.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
FS : In early period, I work by myself. Now I have my own team. base on my idea and my team realize it.
DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
FS : Yes, I have a guesthouse on the mountain tea garden. It is a place where hard to arrive and source shortage. I want to use the concept of container and missy house. Design the guesthouse on the tea garden makes it like the sea hotel. With high-low level which bases on the topography. I believe it will become an excellent opus.
