Designer Interview of Studio One:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

SO : Actually, my original degree is English Literature, after I found out I have great passion towards interior design, I then studied abroad and obtained the BFA degree as Interior Architecture and Design in Academy of Art University in San Francisco, USA.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

SO : I founded Studio One in 2017, my company emphasize on the method of form follows function. We believe design is a solution towards better living, so we always try to achieve that kind of principle to applied onto our projects.

DI: What is "design" for you?

SO : A solution towards better living, and its role as a bridge to connect human being and environment.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

SO : A project with simple forms yet arouse people's sensational perceptions towards ordinary objects, a phycological approach to effect people's life. The essential things in our life is sometimes invisible to our eyes.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

SO : Always eyes on next project...

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

SO : Usually started form studying their company background, their ideologies and principles towards the brand, through the conversations and discussions, tried to find out their needs and problems they were facing currently and came up with design solution.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

SO : I like the material contrast. For example, in the Molding Space retail project, I adopted the rustic concrete columns to make contrast with the fine white cubics, boards and client's sophisticated handmade leather product.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

SO : When client have a specific goal and let me adopt my own way to present it.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

SO : The abilities to arise sensational perceptions and introduce my interpretation of aesthetic value towards a space.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

SO : Calmness and excitness at the same time.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

SO : Satisfied.

DI: What makes a design successful?

SO : a successful design for me is to solve the client's needs and also achieve my aesthetic value.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

SO : For me, a good project is practical yet with aesthetic value.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

SO : To arise people's sensational perception towards the environment we live in.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

SO : From the daily object I've encountered, discover the beauty from ordinary objects.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

SO : Maybe more like minimalism, usually I intend not to using too much materials, I prefer the space provides a sense of calmness and prove people a way to perceive objects with less distractions.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

SO : Study the client background, discovering the certain feature that could transfer to design motif or inspirations, achieve function with minimal forms.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

SO : Proportion with aesthetic view, less materials involved.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

SO : Creativities.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

SO : I usually do hand drawings for inspirations then applied it onto software.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

SO : Make sure what's the priority and invest more time on it, and manage to solve the trifle things during fragmented time.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

SO : For a residential project, it will take maybe 3 months, but commercial case, it would be quicker.

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

SO : What's your design inspiration comes from?

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

SO : A project with specific goal and could interest people.
