Designer Interview of VOATT Design Studio:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

VDS : Yes, I like art creation since I was a child. Besides art, I also like reading, music and movies. Because I like architecture and interior design, I also want to be a good designer and make the urban landscape and people's lives better.

DI: What is "design" for you?

VDS : I think "design" is to make the future a better place. Good design can change the landscape of the city, change the living space of human beings and the way of life.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

VDS : I really like the design of commercial space, because it can highlight the core value and brand spirit of a company. The most important thing is to let the designer play unlimited creativity and imagination.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

VDS : "HAPPY HOUR" is one of our favorite designs. He is a flywheel classroom. We use neon lighting combined with geometric aesthetics to create a psychedelic atmosphere, so that sports can be a very enjoyable thing.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

VDS : Our office is our first design work. We use a lot of metal combined with glass to allow sunlight and air to flow through the space, and we plant a lot of green plants, so that we can be close to nature when we are at work.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

VDS : My favorite material is paint, because infinite colors can create different spatial atmospheres. And my favorite technique is the deformation technique of metal. The curve curved by metal always looks so elegant and perfect.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

VDS : To be honest, I am always the most creative at 11 o'clock every night, perhaps because I am alone and quiet.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

VDS : My most important aspect is the creation of concepts, trying to find the best design for the habits and preferences of the client.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

VDS : I am always confused during the design process. What is the best creation and choice?

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

VDS : I feel moved after the creation, especially seeing the smile on the client's face.

DI: What makes a design successful?

VDS : I think successful design requires good customers, talented designers and excellent construction teams.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

VDS : I will judge whether it is a good design from the perspective of practicality and aesthetics.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

VDS : The designer's responsibility is to understand the social structure and culture, and the materials used must be environmentally friendly.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

VDS : I believe that science and technology are constantly improving. The future design trend will be the combination of artificial intelligence and technology.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

VDS : My first exhibition was at the age of 26, and the exhibition was held in Changhua, Taiwan. The theme was "Daily Life." I hope to have an exhibition of works related to architecture and interior in the near future.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

VDS : Our creative inspiration comes from movies. The visual combination of music in the film is always so attractive, and I hope that my work is full of aesthetics and charming atmosphere.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

VDS : I rarely define my style of creation because I think that the design that every guest needs cannot be the same. If you want to get the same characteristics from each other, I think it is the combination of the human senses and interior design.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

VDS : I am from Taiwan. There is no world heritage in our country. There is only a hundred years of urban planning and architectural appearance. I think the cons for our professional field is that the culture of Taiwanese people in recent years has always pursued rapid and convenient, and gradually lacked the romance and beauty in life. The advantage is that the designers in Taiwan are actually full of creativity and willing to try different structures and materials.

DI: How do you work with companies?

VDS : I was the founder of VOATT DESIGN STUDIO and founded the company with my partner a few years ago. Today, our team members have five people, each with different backgrounds and majors.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

VDS : I think it is not easy for a company to find a good designer. It is better to find a suitable designer than to find a good designer.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

VDS : The first step in my design process is to communicate with the clients and understand his habits and needs, then propose and use 2D+3D images and modeling to discuss the design with the clients.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

VDS : Kitchen, TV wall, furniture, decorations, lamps

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

VDS : Work, work, work, and sleep time, if I have time, I will go to the gym.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

VDS : "Continuous creation and experimentation can make better designs"

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

VDS : I think that when the designer's advantage is to create his favorite design, the disadvantage is that there will always be a better solution from the mind.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

VDS : Good design can make life better.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

VDS : The sense of aesthetics and ability to observe.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

VDS : My office is full of green plants, toys, comfortable sofas and books, which are my inspiration.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

VDS : Until now, I still think that time is never enough. I spend more than 12 hours a day thinking about how design can get better.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

VDS : It depends on the size of the case and is simple or complicated. But usually interior design is shorter than the time of architectural design, maybe an interior design can be completed in two to three months, but the architectural design takes three years.

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

VDS : Is there any better material and concept?

DI: What was your most important job experience?

VDS : I graduated from the Department of Architecture and worked in an architectural firm. After graduating from the Product Design Institute, I decided to run a design company that focused on the design of architecture, interiors and products. For me, the work of the architectural design company has given me a great interest in design.

DI: Who are some of your clients?

VDS : Friends from different professional fields, including teachers, bankers, company leaders and accountants.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

VDS : Any type of design is the concept I want to try. I think everyone has their own type, so there is no single type design as the concept of each case.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

VDS : I will continue to design and bring good concepts to the clients to create a better life.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

VDS : Yes, I am the leader of the team, and I continue to improve my design skills. I believe that only continuous reading and learning can bring better design and more contributions to society.
