DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
JN : My journey in the world of art and design began at a very young age. I was always fascinated by the intricate beauty of jewelry and the way it could tell a story. Growing up, I spent countless hours sketching and experimenting with different designs, which eventually led me to pursue continuous learning and training in this field. I have always been dedicated to learning and improving my skills, constantly seeking new knowledge and techniques in jewelry design. My passion for creating unique and meaningful pieces kept growing, and I realized that this was more than just a career for me—it was a lifelong calling. Becoming an artist/designer was a natural progression for me. I have always been driven by the desire to create something beautiful and impactful. The joy of seeing my designs come to life and the satisfaction of knowing that they bring happiness to others is what motivates me every day. Yes, I have always wanted to be a designer. It feels like a dream come true to be able to turn my passion into a profession and to be recognized for my work on an international platform like the A' Design Award.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
JN : Our design studio, GEMODART, is located in the heart of Tehran, Iran, and is dedicated to creating unique and exquisite jewelry pieces. Founded on the principles of innovation and craftsmanship, our studio is a hub of creativity where art and design come together to produce timeless works of art. At GEMODART, we are passionate about pushing the boundaries of traditional jewelry design. Our team of talented designers and craftsmen work collaboratively to bring our clients' visions to life, whether it's a bespoke piece for a special occasion or a signature collection that reflects the latest trends in fashion and design. Our studio is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and tools that allow us to experiment with various materials and techniques. We pride ourselves on our commitment to quality and attention to detail, ensuring that every piece we create is a true masterpiece. DI: What is "design" for you?
JN : For me, design is the harmonious blend of creativity, functionality, and emotional resonance. It transcends words, allowing us to communicate ideas and stories through shapes and colors. In jewelry design, it means creating pieces that are both visually stunning and meaningful to the wearer. Design is an ongoing journey of exploration and innovation. It's about understanding materials and cultural context while pushing traditional boundaries. Through my designs, I aim to evoke emotions and create lasting connections.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
JN : I enjoy designing pieces that tell a story and have a deep emotional connection. One-of-a-kind, bespoke jewelry that captures a moment, a memory, or a personal sentiment is what I am most passionate about. Whether it's an engagement ring that symbolizes a unique love story or a statement piece that reflects an individual's personality, I find great joy in creating designs that are meaningful and cherished by the wearer.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
JN : One of my most favorite aspects of my work is creating designs for major brands that align with their unique brand identity. Each brand has its own story, values, and aesthetic, and translating these elements into a cohesive and captivating jewelry collection is an exciting challenge for me. I particularly enjoy collaborating with these brands to understand their vision and goals, and then bringing that vision to life through design. The process involves deep research into the brand's history and philosophy, and meticulous attention to detail to ensure that every piece not only meets but exceeds their expectations. Seeing the final designs being embraced by the brand and its customers is incredibly rewarding. It's this blend of creativity, strategy, and collaboration that makes designing for big brands one of the most fulfilling parts of my career.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
JN : The first major project I designed for a company was a complete summer collection for a jewelry brand, tailored to their unique brand identity. This involved creating a series of pieces that reflected the brand’s aesthetics and values, while also capturing the essence of summer. The process included extensive research into their brand history, multiple design iterations, and close collaboration with their team to ensure every piece was perfect. This project was incredibly fulfilling and left a beautiful memory for me.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
JN : One of my favorite materials to work with is titanium. Its strength, lightweight nature, and resistance to corrosion make it an excellent choice for creating durable and innovative jewelry pieces. Titanium also offers a sleek, modern aesthetic that aligns well with contemporary design trends. When it comes to technology, I am particularly fond of 3D modeling software. It enables me to experiment with complex designs and visualize them in a realistic manner before bringing them to life. This technology not only enhances the precision of my work but also allows for greater innovation and efficiency in the design process.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
JN : I feel the most creative during the early mornings and late at night when the world is quiet, and there are fewer distractions. These times allow me to immerse myself in my work and let my imagination flow freely. Additionally, being a poet, writing poetry brings me peace and often sparks new ideas and innovative designs.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
JN : During the design process, I primarily focus on the following aspects: Aesthetics: Ensuring the design is visually appealing and harmonious. The overall look and feel should align with the desired style and trends, while also being unique. Functionality: The practicality and comfort of the piece for the wearer. It should be easy to wear, durable, and easy to maintain. Brand Identity: Reflecting the unique identity and values of the brand. Incorporating elements that make the piece recognizable and memorable, ensuring it stays true to the brand’s story. Materials: Selecting appropriate materials that complement the design and meet the client’s requirements. Understanding the properties and limitations of each material to make informed choices. Innovation: Experimenting with new techniques and technologies to create distinctive and innovative designs. Pushing the boundaries of traditional design to bring fresh ideas to life. By focusing on these key aspects, I aim to create designs that are not only beautiful and functional but also deeply connected to the brand's essence and innovative in nature.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
JN : When I design, I experience a range of emotions that fuel my creativity. There is a deep sense of joy and excitement as I explore new ideas and bring them to life. I also feel a profound sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when a design comes together perfectly. At times, there may be moments of challenge and frustration, but overcoming these hurdles only makes the final result more rewarding. Overall, designing is an emotional journey that combines passion, dedication, and a love for creating something beautiful and meaningful.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
JN : When my designs are realized, I feel an overwhelming sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. It's incredibly rewarding to see my ideas come to life and to know that my work resonates with others. There is also a sense of gratitude and humility, as I am aware of the collaborative effort and craftsmanship that goes into bringing a design to fruition. Witnessing someone wearing and cherishing a piece I designed is the ultimate reward. Additionally, I always experience a deep sense of calm, which motivates me to continue creating meaningful and beautiful designs.
DI: What makes a design successful?
JN : A successful design balances aesthetics, functionality, and emotional connection. It should be visually appealing, practical, and resonate with the audience. Reflecting the brand’s identity, using innovative techniques, and paying attention to details are also crucial.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
JN : When evaluating a design, I first consider the following aspects: Aesthetics: Is the design visually appealing and harmonious? Does it attract attention and convey the intended style and message? Functionality: Is the design practical and user-friendly? Does it serve its intended purpose effectively and efficiently? Emotional Connection: Does the design evoke emotions and create a meaningful connection with its audience? Does it tell a compelling story or resonate on a personal level? Brand Consistency: Does the design align with the brand's identity and values? Is it consistent with the brand's image and enhances its recognition? Innovation: Is the design unique and innovative? Does it push the boundaries and introduce new ideas or techniques? Production and Cost-Effectiveness: Can the design be produced efficiently and within budget? Are the materials and manufacturing processes economically viable?
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
JN : Designers have key responsibilities towards society and the environment, including: Sustainability: Using eco-friendly materials and minimizing waste. Social Impact: Enhancing quality of life and considering accessibility and inclusivity. Ethical Practices: Ensuring fair labor practices and transparency. Innovation for Good: Solving societal and environmental challenges through creative solutions. Education and Advocacy: Promoting sustainable and ethical design practices.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
JN : The design field is evolving with trends like sustainability, technology integration, personalization, inclusivity, and digital transformation. The future of design will likely be more innovative, user-centric, and focused on addressing global challenges.
DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
JN : Our last exhibitions were held at the Tehran Jewelry Exhibition 2024 and the Isfahan Jewelry Exhibition 2024. We showcased our expertise in education and design at both events, which were well-received by attendees. We are currently planning our next exhibition for Winter 2026, with hopes to display our latest designs and innovations at an international venue, continuing to highlight our strengths in the industry.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
JN : I draw inspiration from nature, poetry, and music. These sources provide a rich tapestry of ideas that fuel my creativity. Staying curious, experiencing new environments, and engaging with art and culture also help keep my creative spark alive.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
JN : My design style blends elegance and modernity, inspired by nature, poetry, and music. This style allows me to express my creativity while maintaining a timeless appeal. The main characteristics of my style include: Organic Forms: Using flowing, natural shapes that evoke a sense of harmony and balance. Attention to Detail: Emphasizing intricate details that add depth and character to each piece. Modern Aesthetics: Incorporating contemporary elements that give a fresh and innovative look to the designs. Emotional Connection: Creating designs that evoke emotions and tell a story, making each piece meaningful. My approach to design involves a deep appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the natural world. I strive to create pieces that are not only visually stunning but also carry a deeper significance. Through continuous exploration and experimentation, I aim to push the boundaries of traditional design and bring new, innovative concepts to life.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
JN : I live in Tehran, Iran, and the rich cultural heritage here deeply influences my designs. It offers a wealth of traditional motifs and a vibrant artistic community. However, limited access to resources and economic challenges can pose difficulties in the design process.
DI: How do you work with companies?
JN : I collaborate with companies through a structured process involving consultation, concept development, refinement, production planning, execution, and follow-up. This ensures that the final product meets the client's needs and expectations.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
JN : Working with a Designer: Clear communication. Foster collaboration. Trust and respect the designer's expertise. Regular updates. Set realistic timelines. Selecting a Good Designer: Review portfolios. Consider experience and expertise. Check references and testimonials. Ensure strong communication skills. Assess cultural fit.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
JN : My design process involves drawing inspiration from nature, poetry, and music, generating and refining ideas, creating and testing prototypes, gathering feedback, and ensuring quality in the final production.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
JN : Absolutely! My typical day is structured and quite productive. I start my day early with a morning run from 5 to 6 AM. This invigorating exercise sets a positive tone for the day. After my run, I enjoy a hearty breakfast, followed by a dedicated study session until 8 AM. Once my morning routine is complete, I head to my company where I manage operations and oversee project initiations. This part of the day involves a lot of strategic planning and decision-making to ensure everything runs smoothly. In the afternoons, I shift my focus to teaching. I conduct classes on jewelry design using specialized software, sharing my knowledge and expertise with eager students. Evenings are reserved for personal growth and relaxation. I spend time studying new materials, resting, and engaging in activities that help me learn and improve my skills continuously. This structured approach keeps me productive and ensures a good balance between professional responsibilities and personal development.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
JN : As someone who started working from a young age, I advise young designers to stay curious, embrace failure, seek feedback, build a strong portfolio, network, stay true to their style, practice consistently, stay updated, balance creativity with practicality, and take care of their health
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
JN : Creative expression, diverse projects, significant impact, continuous learning, and personal fulfillment. Negatives: Tight deadlines, balancing client expectations, competitive field, managing work-life balance, and facing creative blocks.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
JN : My "golden rule" in design is to always prioritize user experience. A design should not only be visually appealing but also functional, intuitive, and user-friendly. Understanding the needs and preferences of the end-users is crucial for creating designs that truly resonate and provide value.
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
JN : Essential skills for a designer include creativity, technical proficiency, attention to detail, effective communication, problem-solving, time management, user-centric approach, and adaptability.
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
JN : I can design with any tool at my disposal, whether it's a pencil, a laptop, or an iPad. I can express my ideas in various ways, though my specialty is 3D design software. During the design process, anything interesting can inspire me. For instance, the design of the NATURE earrings was inspired by a contemporary Persian poem
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
JN : I manage my time by setting clear goals, prioritizing tasks, using time-blocking, leveraging project management tools, taking regular breaks, and staying organized. Additionally, my speed in design is high due to the experience I've gained
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
JN : The time it takes to design an object varies widely based on the complexity and scope of the project. Simple designs might take a few hours to a couple of days, while more intricate and detailed projects can take weeks or even months. My experience and efficiency help speed up the process, but thorough research, ideation, prototyping, and revisions are essential steps that can influence the timeline.
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
JN : As a designer, the most frequently asked question I receive is: "How do you come up with your design ideas?" People are often curious about the creative process and the sources of inspiration behind unique designs
DI: What was your most important job experience?
JN : One of my most important job experiences was leading the design of a major jewelry collection. This project required extensive research, creativity, and technical skills to bring innovative designs to life. Collaborating with a talented team, I was able to create pieces that were not only aesthetically pleasing but also resonated with our target audience. The success of this collection was a significant milestone in my career, showcasing my ability to manage complex projects and deliver exceptional results.
DI: Who are some of your clients?
JN : I have had the pleasure of working with a diverse range of clients, including luxury jewelry brands, fashion designers, and private collectors. Some notable clients include high-end boutiques, renowned fashion houses, and individual clients seeking custom-designed pieces. Each project has provided unique challenges and opportunities to showcase my design skills and creativity.
DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
JN : I enjoy working on intricate and detailed jewelry designs the most. The meticulous nature of jewelry design allows me to combine creativity with technical precision, resulting in unique and meaningful pieces. I find great satisfaction in transforming concepts into tangible creations that can be cherished and admired
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
JN : My future plans are to expand and innovate within my brand. I aim to introduce unique collections, collaborate with talented designers, and explore new markets. Additionally, I am committed to sharing my knowledge through teaching and mentoring young designers, inspiring the next generation of creatives.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
JN : I work alongside my spouse, Melika Etemadi, who is also a renowned jewelry designer. Together, we manage a highly professional and ethical team. This collaborative environment allows us to bring diverse perspectives and expertise to our projects, leading to innovative and refined designs

JN : In the realm of gold and jewelry, we always have special surprises for our audience. We don't reveal any details before showcasing them, ensuring that each new design is a delightful surprise.
