DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
AK : Growing up in Ukraine, I was immersed in a world of design from a young age, with both my parents being interior designers. This creative environment fostered my fascination with aesthetics and the transformative power of spaces. My journey into interior design began in childhood, and by the age of 12, I knew I wanted to pursue this path. Over the past decade, my passion has taken me across the globe, enriching my understanding and approach to design through diverse international projects.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
AK : Arsight is an interior design studio based in New York City that I founded. We offer comprehensive, turn-key services, ensuring a seamless and efficient process from initial design concept to final styling. Our portfolio includes high-end residential and commercial spaces both nationally and internationally. Our work has been recognized in esteemed publications like The New York Times and Interior Design Magazine and in prestigious design competitions such as the SBID and NYCxDESIGN Awards.
DI: What is "design" for you?
AK : Design is a symphony of aesthetics, functionality, and emotion. It's an ever-evolving narrative that reflects the essence of its inhabitants while harmonizing with its environment. It's not just about creating spaces; it's about curating experiences that resonate on a deeper, more personal level.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
AK : I am passionate about creating designs that are functional, personal, and timeless. Especially in interiors, the design should resonate with the client's lifestyle or a brand's ethos. I enjoy projects that challenge me to innovate and push the boundaries of traditional design, blending classic elements with modern, handcrafted pieces.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
AK : One of my favorite projects is a comprehensive renovation in Tribeca, NYC. This project drew inspiration from natural elements like stone, sand, and wood, creating a luxurious yet authentic and lived-in space. It resonated deeply with the client's desire for a unique and welcoming home, embodying our design philosophy of 'streamlined complexity.'
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
AK : The first significant project I designed was a brownstone in Brooklyn. This project was special as it involved restoring a 140-year-old property, preserving its historic charm while integrating modern, energy-efficient technologies. This balance between preservation and innovation set the tone for my future projects.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
AK : I have a profound appreciation for natural materials like wood, stone, and clay. These materials bring a tactile, authentic quality to spaces. Additionally, I leverage advanced technologies such as augmented reality and AI-driven design to push the boundaries of creativity and precision in my work.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
AK : I feel the most creative when I am immersed in nature or exploring new cultures. The organic forms and patterns found in nature often spark innovative ideas. Similarly, the vibrant life and diverse architecture of cities like New York provide endless inspiration.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
AK : I focus on creating a balance between form and function. Every design must be aesthetically pleasing and serve its intended purpose efficiently. I also emphasize storytelling, ensuring that each space resonates with the client's personal journey and experiences.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
AK : Designing evokes a sense of excitement and curiosity in me. It is a process of discovery, where each project presents a new challenge and opportunity to innovate. There's also a profound sense of satisfaction in knowing that the spaces I create can significantly impact people's lives.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
AK : Seeing a design come to life and witnessing the client's reaction is immensely rewarding. It signifies the realization of a vision and the culmination of a collaborative effort. This moment often brings a mix of joy, pride, and fulfillment.
DI: What makes a design successful?
AK : A successful design seamlessly integrates aesthetics and functionality. It should evoke an emotional response, creating a sense of belonging and comfort. Additionally, it should be timeless, transcending fleeting trends while staying true to the client's needs and aspirations.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
AK : The first aspects I consider are the balance between form and function and the emotional impact of the design. A good design should be both visually striking and highly functional, resonating with the user's lifestyle and preferences.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
AK : Designers have a responsibility to create sustainable and inclusive spaces. This means using eco-friendly materials, incorporating energy-efficient technologies, and designing spaces that are accessible and comfortable for everyone. Our work should contribute positively to the environment and society, promoting well-being and sustainability.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
AK : The design field is evolving towards sustainability, adaptability, and inclusivity. Future designs will focus on reducing environmental impact, creating adaptable spaces that cater to dynamic lifestyles, and ensuring accessibility for all. Technological advancements like augmented reality and AI will continue to revolutionize the way we conceptualize and execute designs.
DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
AK : My last exhibition was part of the NYCxDESIGN Awards showcase in New York City. I am currently planning my next exhibition, which will focus on sustainable design practices and is scheduled for early next year.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
AK : My design inspiration comes from various sources, including nature, art, history, and urban life. Traveling and experiencing different cultures also play a significant role in feeding my creativity. I constantly explore new ideas, attend design fairs, and engage with other creatives to stay inspired and informed.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
AK : My design style is best described as 'streamlined complexity,' which focuses on creating timeless designs that blend contrasting elements into cohesive and meaningful spaces. I explore this style to move away from fleeting trends, aiming for designs that tell a story and resonate deeply with clients' individual journeys. My approach is collaborative, starting with understanding the client's vision and evolving through continuous feedback and innovation.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
AK : I live in New York City, but my European roots significantly influence my design sensibility. The rich design heritage of Europe emphasizes craftsmanship, history, and authenticity, which I blend with the innovative and grand approach of American design. This fusion allows me to create spaces that are both timeless and avant-garde.
DI: How do you work with companies?
AK : We work with companies by offering comprehensive design services that cover every aspect of a project, from conceptualization to final execution. Our process involves close collaboration with clients to understand their needs and preferences, ensuring that the final design aligns with their vision and goals.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
AK : Companies should look for designers who not only have a strong portfolio but also demonstrate a deep understanding of their brand and vision. It's important to find a designer who is collaborative, communicative, and flexible. Look for a track record of successful projects and client testimonials to ensure the designer can deliver on their promises.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
AK : My design process is inherently collaborative. It starts with an in-depth understanding of the client's vision and needs. From there, we create mood boards, sketches, and 3D visualizations, enabling the client to envision the final space. Continuous feedback loops and site visits ensure that the design evolves organically, marrying our expertise with the client's preferences. This iterative approach ensures that the final product is both innovative and personal.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
AK : 1. A handcrafted wooden dining table from a local artisan. 2. A collection of vintage art pieces. 3. A modular sofa that can be reconfigured for different occasions. 4. Custom-made curtains with intricate patterns. 5. A unique light fixture that serves as both a functional and artistic element.
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
AK : A typical day starts with a morning meditation and a cup of coffee. I then review the day's schedule and head to the studio. My day involves a mix of client meetings, site visits, and collaborative sessions with my team. I spend time sketching and working on design concepts, followed by reviewing project progress and making necessary adjustments. Evenings are often reserved for personal relaxation or attending design events and exhibitions.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
AK : Stay curious and never stop learning. Our industry thrives on innovation, so constantly expose yourself to new ideas, cultures, and techniques. Find your unique voice and be true to it; authenticity resonates more than imitation. Listen to and learn from each space and client, and develop a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of how spaces can transform lives.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
AK : Positives include the ability to transform spaces and improve people's lives, the continuous opportunity for creative expression, and the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the industry. Negatives can include the pressure to constantly innovate, the challenges of balancing client expectations with design integrity, and the demanding nature of project timelines.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
AK : Design with empathy and authenticity. Every space has a story waiting to be told; our job is to weave that narrative beautifully while staying true to the client's needs and aspirations.
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
AK : Critical skills include creativity, attention to detail, strong communication, and project management. Additionally, technical proficiency with design software, a deep understanding of materials and construction methods, and the ability to empathize with clients' needs are crucial.
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
AK : My toolbox includes design software like AutoCAD and SketchUp, project management tools, and visualization applications. I also rely on a vast library of design books and magazines for inspiration. Engaging with art, nature, and travel continuously feeds my creative process.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
AK : I manage my time by prioritizing tasks, setting clear deadlines, and using project management tools to track progress. Delegating responsibilities to my team and maintaining open communication channels ensures that projects stay on schedule without compromising quality.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
AK : The time required to design an object can vary widely depending on its complexity and scope. On average, a small project might take a few weeks, while larger, more intricate designs can take several months from concept to completion.
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
AK : The most frequently asked question is, "How do you balance form and function in your designs?" Clients are often curious about how I create spaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional.
DI: What was your most important job experience?
AK : One of the most important job experiences was the comprehensive renovation of a Tribeca apartment. This project allowed me to apply my 'Urban Harmony' concept, which focuses on sustainability and the use of natural materials. The success of this project, both in terms of design and client satisfaction, was a pivotal moment in my career.
DI: Who are some of your clients?
AK : Our clients include a diverse range of individuals and businesses, from high-end residential homeowners to commercial establishments like hotels and restaurants. Notable clients include luxury developers like Green Lux Developments, with whom we have completed award-winning projects.
DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
AK : I enjoy designing spaces that challenge traditional conventions and push the boundaries of creativity. Projects that allow me to blend classic elements with modern, handcrafted pieces are particularly fulfilling, as they enable me to create unique, timeless designs.
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
AK : My future plans include expanding Arsight's reach, exploring new markets, and continuing to innovate in sustainable and adaptive design. I am also looking forward to more collaborative projects that merge technology with traditional design principles.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
AK : While I lead the design vision, Arsight operates as a collaborative team. Each project benefits from the diverse expertise of our team members, ensuring a holistic and comprehensive approach to design.
DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
AK : We are currently working on an exciting project for a boutique hotel in Manhattan. This project focuses on creating a unique guest experience by blending luxurious comfort with sustainable design practices. We are using local materials and artisans to create an authentic, memorable space.
