We, as the Designer Interviews ("DI") had the distinct pleasure and opportunity to interview award-winning, most creative and innovative Ensieh Yazdani ("EY").
Ensieh Yazdani has gotten her master's degree in MBA. She started learning 3D jewelry design in 2018 at MDA Academy, Tehran, Iran. Also, she studied jewelry design at Istituto di Moda Burgo Academy, Istanbul, Turkey. She believes that design is the basis of creation. Every product that exists in the world is the result of a correct connection between the idea and the making of that product, therefore, at the beginning, there must be the ability to depict the idea. Creativity, teamwork, communication skills, competition, targeting and challenging one's ability to achieve it are among her interests in the work.

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
EY : Ever since I can remember, I have been passionate about art and design. From childhood drawings to professional projects, I have always been on the lookout for new ways to express my creativity. Each project I undertake gives me the opportunity to learn more about art and design and to improve my skills. The desire to create and a constant drive to improve myself in the field of art and design were the most important factors that turned me into an artist and designer. Moreover, the encouragement and support of my family and friends played a significant role in this journey. The ability to positively influence through design and create beautiful and functional things has always been appealing to me. In response to your question about whether I have always wanted to be a designer, I must say yes, I have always been interested in design and art. From my childhood days when I spent hours drawing and designing, I knew that this was the path I wanted to follow in my life. The more I learned about design and gained experience, the more this interest and passion grew.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
EY : I have established a jewelry design brand named Ensieh Yazdani. Our company focuses on creating unique and elegant jewelry pieces that combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design elements. Each piece is meticulously crafted to reflect not only beauty and elegance but also a story and meaning behind it. At Ensieh Yazdani, we take pride in using high-quality materials and paying attention to every detail to ensure our jewelry is not only visually stunning but also durable and comfortable to wear. Our designs often draw inspiration from nature, culture, and personal experiences, making each piece a true work of art. We believe that jewelry should be more than just an accessory; it should be an expression of individuality and a statement of style. DI: What is "design" for you?
EY : Design, for me, is a creative process that combines art and science to create something innovative and effective. In this process, designers draw inspiration from their surroundings, user needs, and existing constraints to create things that offer new and better experiences. Creating in design can mean improving and enhancing an existing product or even inventing something entirely new and unprecedented. This process requires constant analysis, testing, and iteration to ultimately achieve results that are both beautiful and functional. For me, creating is not just a job, but a way of life. From seeking beauty in small details to finding innovative solutions to complex problems, design is always evolving and changing.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
EY : I enjoy designing creative works that carry beautiful messages for the world, are practical, and environmentally friendly. For me, design is a process that merges art and science to create something innovative and effective. I find joy in projects that allow me to use my imagination and innovation to push boundaries and provide new solutions to existing problems. I am especially passionate about sustainable design, where I can focus on creating solutions that are environmentally conscious and socially responsible. I love to design with an emphasis on sustainability because it allows me to make a positive impact on the world while practicing my craft. Overall, the works I like designing most are those that blend creativity, beauty, practicality, and environmental friendliness to create unique and impactful designs.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
EY : One of my favorite designs is in the realm of jewelry, specifically the Tiffany & Co engagement ring. This iconic piece has become synonymous with elegance and timeless beauty. The design is characterized by its simplicity and the way it highlights the diamond. The classic six-prong setting, invented by Charles Lewis Tiffany in 1886, revolutionized how diamonds were presented in engagement rings. The six prongs lift the diamond above the band, allowing light to pass through the stone from all angles, enhancing its brilliance and sparkle. This minimalist yet highly effective design has stood the test of time and remains one of the most sought-after engagement ring styles in the world. It's a perfect example of how thoughtful design can create something enduring and universally admired.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
EY : My first design was a necklace made from yellow gold, featuring peridot and diamond stones. This design was very special to me, as it involved blending natural and radiant elements to create a unique and captivating piece. Peridot, with its distinctive green color, symbolizes freshness and growth, while diamond, with its endless sparkle, adds grandeur and brilliance to the necklace. The yellow gold, with its natural warmth, perfectly harmonizes the two precious stones. This necklace reflects my expertise and creativity in utilizing high-quality materials and symbolizes my commitment to beauty and precision in the art of jewelry making.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
EY : As a jewelry designer, one of my favorite materials is platinum. This precious metal is not only very beautiful and radiant, but also extremely durable and resistant, making it ideal for creating valuable jewelry. Platinum is one of the rarest metals, and due to its unique properties, it is the first choice for many jewelry designers to hold precious stones like diamonds. This naturally white metal retains its color and requires minimal maintenance and repairs. Additionally, platinum's softness and flexibility allow for the creation of intricate and delicate designs. These characteristics, along with platinum's inherent beauty and brilliance, make it one of the most popular materials in jewelry in jewelry making.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
EY : I feel the most creative in unexpected moments. It can happen at any time of day, and often when I least expect it. A sudden glimpse of a beautiful landscape, an interesting object, or even a fleeting thought can spark a new idea in my mind. This unpredictability keeps the creative process exciting and dynamic for me. It's as if inspiration is always around the corner, ready to strike when I encounter something that resonates with me on a deeper level.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
EY : When designing, I focus on several key aspects to ensure the final product is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. These aspects include: 1. Functionality: The design must serve its intended purpose effectively. Whether it's a piece of jewelry, a piece of furniture, or a software interface, it needs to fulfill the needs and expectations of the user. 2. Aesthetics: Visual appeal is crucial. I pay close attention to the balance, harmony, and overall look of the design. The choice of colors, materials, and shapes all play a significant role. 3. Usability: The design should be intuitive and easy to use. I consider how the user will interact with the design and strive to make that interaction as smooth and enjoyable as possible. 4. Sustainability: I aim to use materials and processes that are environmentally friendly and sustainable. This is increasingly important in today’s world and is a key consideration in my design process. 5. Innovation: I look for ways to incorporate new ideas, techniques, and technologies to make the design stand out. This can involve experimenting with new materials, using cutting-edge technology, or finding creative solutions to design challenges.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
EY : When I design, a wide range of emotions come into play. Inspiration: The initial spark of an idea often fills me with excitement and enthusiasm. This is a highly motivating phase where everything seems possible. Creativity: As I dive into the creative process, I experience a sense of flow and fulfillment. This is when my imagination is at its peak, and I feel deeply connected to my work. Challenge: Designing isn't without its challenges. When faced with obstacles, I feel a sense of determination and focus. Overcoming these hurdles is both satisfying and rewarding. Satisfaction: Seeing my vision take shape gives me a deep sense of satisfaction and pride. Watching a design evolve from a concept to a finished product is incredibly fulfilling. Frustration: Not everything goes according to plan, and there are moments of frustration and disappointment. However, these moments are opportunities for growth and learning. Anticipation: As I approach the completion of a design, I feel a sense of anticipation and eagerness to see the final result and share it with others. Pride: Finally, completing a design that meets or exceeds my expectations brings a strong sense of pride and accomplishment. Emotions are an integral part of the creative process, making designing a deeply personal and rewarding experience.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
EY : When my designs are realized, I experience a wide range of emotions. There is joy and satisfaction in seeing a design come to life; it is incredibly rewarding. I feel immense pride in my work, knowing that my creativity and skills have culminated in something tangible and beautiful. The excitement of witnessing others' reactions to the design adds to the thrill. Sharing my work with clients, colleagues, and the world is exhilarating. Completing a design project also brings a sense of relief. Knowing that all the hard work has paid off and the project has met my expectations is very reassuring. In essence, the realization of a design often sparks new ideas and inspirations for future projects. It's a continuous cycle of creativity and innovation.
DI: What makes a design successful?
EY : The success of a design is the result of several key factors. A successful design is flexible and adaptable and can evolve over time. It must be flexible enough to incorporate necessary changes and improvements based on user feedback and technological advancements. User feedback is essential for improving and refining the design. In terms of functionality, a design must effectively meet the designer's intended purpose and the needs and expectations of the users without compromising on usability. Aesthetically, a visually appealing design can attract and engage users. The use of color, form, typography, and layout plays a significant role in creating an attractive design. Additionally, emotional connection can make the design memorable and impactful. A design that evokes emotions such as joy, comfort, or excitement can create a lasting impression. Incorporating innovative elements can make a design stand out. This can include using new materials, technologies, or creative problem-solving approaches. A successful design considers its environmental impact. Using sustainable materials and methods not only benefits the planet but also appeals to eco-conscious users. Remember, the little things matter. Attention to small details can elevate a design from good to exceptional. This includes finishing touches, precision, and craftsmanship.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
EY : When giving a theme to designers, I consider the following key aspects to ensure a successful and impactful design: 1. Originality: The design should be unique and distinctive. Originality sets a design apart and makes it memorable. I encourage designers to think outside the box and bring fresh perspectives to the theme. 2. Creativity: Creativity is at the heart of any great design. It involves the innovative use of materials, forms, and techniques. I look for designs that showcase a high level of creativity and artistic expression. 3. Technicality: Technical expertise is crucial for the feasibility and functionality of the design. This includes the precision of construction, the quality of materials used, and the overall craftsmanship. A technically sound design ensures longevity and usability. 4. Wearability: For fashion-related designs, wearability is essential. The design should be comfortable, practical, and suitable for everyday use. It should meet the functional needs of the wearer while maintaining aesthetic appeal. 5. Marketability: A successful design must also have commercial appeal. DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
EY : From my point of view, designers have several important responsibilities towards society and the environment: 1. Sustainability: Designers should prioritize sustainability by using eco-friendly materials and processes. This includes minimizing waste, reducing carbon footprints, and promoting recycling and upcycling in their designs. 2. Social Impact: Designers have the power to influence society positively. DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
EY : My last exhibition was on August 15, 2024, in Bulgaria. I haven't finalized the date for my next exhibition yet, but I aim to showcase my designs in mid-2025.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
EY : -Nature: One of my biggest sources of inspiration is nature. Patterns, colors, textures, and natural forms provide an endless supply of fresh ideas for my designs. - Art Galleries and Museums: Visiting galleries and museums helps me observe and analyze various forms of art and design, drawing inspiration from them. -Everyday Life: Sometimes, the simple things we see in our everyday life can be inspiring, such as an old building, a scene from nature, or even a common object. -Social Media and Internet: Following other designers and artists on social media, blogs, and design websites allows me to stay updated with new trends and ideas. -Books and Magazines: Reading books and magazines related to design, art, and even other topics can provide new insights and ideas. -Traveling: Traveling to new places and experiencing different cultures is a great source of inspiration and creativity. The architecture, arts, and ways of life in various places can add new perspectives to my design work.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
EY : I am interested in simple yet challenging design styles. I tend to use clean lines, simple forms, and a limited color palette to keep my designs clear and elegant. My goal is to create designs that are not only beautiful but also functional. I believe that simplicity and clarity in design can have a greater impact and make it easier for users to connect with it. In general, my design focus includes: 1. Clean lines and simple forms: Creating elegant and functional designs using simple forms and clean lines. 2. Smart use of negative space: Balancing and emphasizing important elements through intelligent use of empty space. 3. Limited and harmonious color palette: Using few and coordinated colors to create harmony and consistency in design. 4. User-focused design: Creating practical and effective solutions by considering the needs and experiences of users. My design approach is based on thorough research and a deep understanding of the project's needs and objectives. I start by analyzing problems and gathering information, then proceed to brainstorming and creating prototypes. Throughout the process, I collect feedback and make necessary adjustments to achieve the best possible outcome.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
EY : I live in Iran, a country with a rich and ancient history and culture. Iran's cultural heritage, from patterns and arts to historical architecture, provides an endless source of inspiration for my designs and creates a strong and unique background for creating artistic works. However, the unique circumstances in Iran also bring about certain challenges. On the one hand, these challenges drive Iranian designers to be more creative and find more innovative solutions. These conditions push us towards self-sufficiency and the use of domestic resources, thereby turning threats into opportunities. On the other hand, limited access to some international resources and technologies can complicate the design process. These limitations sometimes lead to missed opportunities for talented designers who, despite their hard work to advance, lack access to necessary tools and technologies, which can, in the long run, lead to a decrease in motivation.
DI: How do you work with companies?
EY : When I collaborate with companies, I bring a unique blend of creativity, innovation, and precision to every project. My approach is highly client-centric, ensuring that the specific needs and goals of each company are thoroughly understood and met. 1. Initial Consultation: The process begins with an in-depth consultation to discuss the company’s vision, goals, and requirements. This helps me tailor my approach to align perfectly with their expectations. 2. Concept Development: I then move on to the concept development phase, where I brainstorm and sketch various ideas. This phase involves regular feedback sessions with the company to ensure we are on the right track. 3. Design Execution: Once a concept is approved, I meticulously work on the design execution. I use the latest design tools and technologies to create high-quality, innovative, and functional designs. 4. At this stage, I use sketches and preliminary designs to visualize my ideas. 3. Design Development: After selecting the best ideas, I start developing them. This stage includes creating 3D models and prototypes to review and improve the design. 4. Evaluation and Feedback: I share my designs with the team or clients and receive feedback. I use this feedback to improve my designs. 5. Finalization and Presentation: After refining and finalizing the design, I prepare it for presentation. This includes creating high-quality renders and animations for the final presentation. 6. Implementation and Testing: Finally, I implement and test the final design to ensure its functionality and quality. These steps help me maintain an organized and effective design process and create high-quality and impactful designs.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
EY : Here are five of my favorite design items at home: 1. Mid-Century Modern Chair: This chair is not only stylish and comfortable but also a timeless piece that adds character to my living space. Its clean lines and organic curves are a perfect example of mid-century modern design. 2. Smart Lighting System: The smart lighting system allows me to customize the ambiance of my home with ease. I can adjust the brightness and color to match my mood or activities, making it both functional and aesthetically pleasing. 3. Vintage Record Player: This vintage record player not only plays my favorite vinyl records but also serves as a charming decorative piece. DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
EY : A day in my life as a designer is a blend of creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving. My day typically starts with a cup of coffee and a review of my current projects and tasks. I spend the morning brainstorming ideas, sketching concepts, and refining designs. Collaboration is key in my work, so I often have meetings with clients, team members, or other stakeholders to discuss project requirements, gather feedback, and make necessary adjustments. In the afternoon, I dive into the more technical aspects of design. This involves using various design software to create detailed layouts, prototypes, and mockups. I pay close attention to detail and ensure that every element of the design is aligned with the project goals and user needs. Throughout the day, I stay inspired by exploring new design trends, reading industry articles, and engaging with the design community. I also take breaks to recharge, as I believe that a fresh mind leads to better creativity and productivity. Towards the end of the day, I review my progress, make any final tweaks, and prepare for the next steps. I find great satisfaction in seeing my designs come to life and knowing that they positively impact users and clients. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities, making my role as a designer both exciting and fulfilling.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
EY : 1. Stay Curious: Design is constantly evolving. Be open to learning new things, exploring different styles, and staying updated with industry trends. 2. Embrace Feedback: Constructive criticism is invaluable. Use it to improve your skills and grow. Don't take it personally; see it as an opportunity to get better. 3. Build a Strong Portfolio: Your portfolio is your best marketing tool. Showcase your best work and include a variety of projects that demonstrate your versatility. 4. Network: Connect with other designers, attend industry events, and be active in design communities. Networking can lead to collaborations, job opportunities, and valuable advice. 5. DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
EY : My golden rule in design is to always prioritize the user's experience and needs. A design must not only be visually appealing and innovative but also intuitive and functional. It should solve problems, provide value, and create a positive emotional connection with its users.
