Designer Interview of Mark Boey:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

MB : I've studied, Visual communication, Illustration, Digital Media and photography. I've been in the industry for over 20 years. I've started as a Print designer, to Multimedia design, then I've moved to the Film and TV space. Now I'm working on the experience sections.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

MB : Untitled Studios is a creative agency that believes in the power of converging design and technology to transform stories and ideas into compelling lasting experiences.

DI: What is "design" for you?

MB : Design is more than visual communication, its more than choosing the right colours, typeface. We need to look deeper than that, it's about problem-solving, coming up with a solution for a solution. It's about change for the better.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

MB : My favourite design is motion, I feel that you can convey better storytelling through motion.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

MB : My first design is for the Australian Museum. I'd designed 6 posters for the launch. Each poster took over 3 months to produce.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

MB : My favourite material is Pen and Paper. I feel that is the quickest way to get my idea out of my head.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

MB : During the night is my most creative space.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

MB : I focus more on storytelling and concept creation.

DI: What makes a design successful?

MB : There are no one thing for successful design, but there are many little elements that make it amazing.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

MB : Does the design solve problems? Does it improve our lives? Does it communicate well? Does it tell a story?

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

MB : We as a designer, we need to be thinking bigger. We need to consider sustainable design in the environment and society.
