DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
FDL : I have been working in the interior design industry for more than 20 years after I attained my higher diploma in this specific field. I am passionate in interior design since I was young as I want to create a better living place for people.
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
FDL : Fusion Design Ltd was established in the early 90s, initially set up to provide exceptional interior design solutions to high-end commercial projects for the renowned property developers in Hong Kong.
DI: What is "design" for you?
FDL : Design in my sense is people-oriented, to create something which people like and benefit from it. Uniqueness and functionality are important elements.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
FDL : Residence and Clubhouse.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
FDL : Morpheus, Macau is my most favorite design. Its first free-form high-rise exoskeleton outlook impressed me deeply. It also combines structural integrity and sculptural form into the design.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
FDL : A big show house in China.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
FDL : My favorite material is timber. I like its naturalness that caters to people-oriented design.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
FDL : The infinity swimming pool at Vibe Centro Clubhouse combined indoor and outdoor design which created an outstanding view.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
FDL : Spacing and functionality are most important due to the environmental limitation in Hong Kong.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
FDL : I feel relaxed and satisfied.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
FDL : I am happy and excited.
DI: What makes a design successful?
FDL : Teamwork as we need different insights to produce a successful design.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
FDL : Customer satisfaction is my first concern especially for residential project.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
FDL : Designer should fully utilize all the areas and reduce any form of waste causing pollution to the environment. At the same time, they should apply more environmental-friendly products.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
FDL : It is becoming more sustainable. More and more technology like light control system and eco-friendly materials will be applied.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
FDL : My design inspiration comes from experience and appreciation from travelling around the world. Sources of inspirations are mainly from figuring out the pros and cons of the artworks.
DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?
FDL : Modern luxury. I used to create uniqueness and valuable design.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
FDL : Hong Kong. Yes. There are space and resources limitations in Hong Kong, so it is necessary to provide functional and personalized design. Although not all designs could be applied in Hong Kong, uniqueness will be created.
DI: How do you work with companies?
FDL : By frequent meetings, email communications and presentations to understand their needs and requirement and provide various revisions.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
FDL : Give clear briefing and less limitation to designer. By browsing their web site or portfolio initially and then interview with them to see if they are good match. Word of mouth or reviews are important too.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
FDL : It starts with a design brief provided by client which help designer to capture ideas and understand clients’ preferences. After that, we will work on floor plan, mood board and design proposal.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
FDL : Bed, dining table, sofa, kitchen and bathroom.
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
FDL : I am always having a work-life balance day in order to increase engagement and bring out creative ideas.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
FDL : Technology plays an important role in the future of interior design. Designer would be encouraged to use more eco-friendly materials, such as artificial stone instead of marble.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
FDL : Design is subjective and client’s satisfaction would be the pro of being a designer. However, long working hours is the negative side.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
FDL : Design should focus on people’s needs, raising awareness on social sustainability.
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
FDL : Understanding the need of clients and addressing their needs.
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
FDL : AutoCAD, 3D Max and Photoshop
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
FDL : Well-thought, well-organized and well-planned.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
FDL : 3 to 6 months.
