Designer Interview of Małgorzata Sobocinska-Kiss:
DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
MS : I wanted to be a designer and I choose the studies on Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw where I’ve done the master degree and Academyof Fine Arts in Gdansk, Poland where I've done my PhD. One year ago I and my coleagues started with new scientific magazine on graphic design and new media "dsignn".
DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?
MS : I'm freelance designer and tutor on Graphics Department on WIT Academy.
DI: What is "design" for you?
MS : Design makes an influence and changes human lifes.
DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?
MS : I am graphic designer and I mainly deal with wayfinding and corporate identity designing.
DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?
MS : I've designed a "Waycludi" wayfinding system. I think its well designed and I'm proud of it.
DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?
MS : It was so many years ago, so I dont remember.
DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?
MS : I work on computer programmes.
DI: When do you feel the most creative?
MS : I feel the most creative on the bigining of the project.
DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?
MS : I focus most on accessibility for people with reduced functionality.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?
MS : I feel joy and creativity while designing.
DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?
MS : I am proud of what I've created.
DI: What makes a design successful?
MS : A project is successful when it is implemented and users are satisfied.
DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?
MS : At the beginning, I always pay attention to the readability of the information, and then to the aesthetics of the design.
DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?
MS : The designer should pay attention to the usability of the design and adapting them to the needs of users.
DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
MS : As Western societies getting older, the designer should pay attention to the usability of the design and adapting it to the needs of older users, because they will be the main recipients of his designs.
DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?
MS : My last exhibition was in Pruszków, Poland. I didnt planned next one yet.
DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?
MS : It depends on the type of project I create.
DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
MS : My designs are largely practical, although depending on the type of project, I adapt its style to the circumstances.
DI: How do you work with companies?
MS : I try to work reliably and on time. In my opinion, good cooperation with the client depends on it.
DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
MS : It depends on the company's management and is different each time.
DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?
MS : I usually design from the big end to the detail as the project progresses.
DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?
MS : I don't have any favorite items
DI: Can you describe a day in your life?
MS : Since I have a family - a husband, three children and a dog, my day starts with morning coffee. To get all things done, I have to be well organized. As an academic lecturer, I also have longer holidays, which allows me to gather strength for work.
DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?
MS : A designer must be reliable, diligent, attentive to the needs of others and try to solve design problems.
DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
MS : A positive aspect is acting in constant creativity. A negative aspect is often the unstable situation in the industry.
DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?
MS : A designer must be reliable, diligent, attentive to the needs of others and try to solve design problems.
DI: What skills are most important for a designer?
MS : A designer should first of all notice details.
DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
MS : I always use Adobe Creative Cloud and Affinity Package.
DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?
MS : This is a difficult question to answer. It depends on the type of project.
DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?
MS : I will answer in the same way as with the previous question. It depends on the type of project.
DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?
MS : How much does it costs?
DI: What was your most important job experience?
MS : Now I work as a creative director on scientific design magazine. It's a very inspiring experience.

MS : My main client is WIT Academy. I'm curator and designer of best diplomas exhibition and
DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?
MS : No I love to design the magazine layout.
DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?
MS : As a member of editorial team I'm working on next issue of our "dsignn" magazine.
DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?
MS : It depends on the kind of the project.
DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?
