Designer Interview of Yuchen Chen:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

YC : I have interested in drawing something when I was a kid. So I was recommended to be an assistant of art teacher in middle school. After that, I received a good art education with my parents' support. After graduating from high school, I was admitted to the university of the Arts to major in visual communication design. I always dream of becoming an active and valued designer in the realm of graphic design. I really love communication design and believe that design is in my blood.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

YC : Absolutely Shock You Studio is a creative agency based in Shanghai, China and offering design solutions in fields of publication, art, architecture, film, music, etc. Our work encompasses graphics and identity, products and packaging, exhibitions and campaigns, websites and digital experiences, advertising and communications, books and printed matter design, and more. Thanks to its unique approach of sharp strategic knowledge, combined with acute sense of aesthetics, we won client’s recognition and numerous international and domestic awards.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

YC : In my opinion, Good design is the design with high involvement and design is no longer the individual work of designer. Participation design drives users to actively participate in the design and act as the designer. The special intention of the designer will integrate user’s self-conscious experience. The role of user experiences fundamental change from information receiver to righteous participant in the design process.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

YC : Technology development has broken the limitations between art and science and broadened people's horizons of art and science, which has brought more possibilities to art. The new creative media provides new carriers and new possibilities for communication design, and provides an operable platform for the audience to participate in the design, so that people have a better understanding and reflection on the work of interaction design. At the same time, the fusion of static and graphic design works, as well as the fusion of senses such as hearing, taste, smell, and touch, can achieve multiple design effects. In the case of stimulating the audience through the senses, the traditional graphic design produced by interactive visual communication design is more suitable for human sense organs to obtain diversified information, so as to obtain a better information transmission effect.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

YC : Communication Skill, Willingness To Learn, Aestheticintelligence, Technology, Creativity, Time Management, Typography.
