Designer Interview of SHUNSUKE OHE:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

SO : I think being a designer is my joy and the meaning of living. And I think design is the best way to express yourself.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

SO : I started the design studio "LUSTY design" about 9 years ago. I have been involved in architectural design, interior design, and interior coordination. My customers range from corporations to individuals.

DI: What is "design" for you?

SO : It's my purpose.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

SO : I like the design of spaces for people like resort hotels to enjoy their lives.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

SO : I can't give a general answer because it changes from time to time.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

SO : It's a friend's cafe.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

SO : Marble, stone, and wood.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

SO : It's time to relax and feel happy.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

SO : Both design and functionality.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

SO : I feel happy to be able to design as a job

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

SO : I feel lovable like my child.

DI: What makes a design successful?

SO : I think that design performance, practicality, functionality, and cost are all established.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

SO : The overall balance. For example, colors, patterns, dimensions, etc.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

SO : Design is an integral part of life, and I believe that the quality of design affects the quality of life. I consider designers to be in a position to make a big impact on people's lives.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

SO : I don't know much about "design field" abroad, In Japan where I live, it is very much in people's lives I feel that there is a growing awareness that it is important and interesting.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

SO : I haven't done it yet, but I would like to do it first in Japan and then in Europe.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

SO : I don't limit anything in particular, but I pay close attention to the design of everything in my daily life. It doesn't matter whether you are in Japan or overseas.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

SO : Various design patterns. It features a wide range of items, from pop and cute to cool and chic, from designs that incorporate overseas essences to Japanese styles.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

SO : I live in Japan. I am not very conscious of Japanese traditional style design, but when I receive a request for such a design project, I can design it without difficulty. I can't think of any weaknesses.

DI: How do you work with companies?

SO : The correspondence is the same for both companies and individuals. I do my best to make my clients happy.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

SO : I think the client should tell the designer what he thinks and what he wants. And I think it's a good designer to do his best to listen and answer the client's story.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

SO : Sometimes the design comes to mind first, and sometimes the design is completed based on the results of thinking from the functional aspect. There is no well-defined process and it varies from time to time.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

SO : Outside view from the balcony,coffee,my family, sofa and relaxing atmosphere.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

SO : It's different every day. Drinking coffee, driving a Porsche, and thanking life is the same every day.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

SO : I think I'm still young. So I can't give you any advice, but I think you should always enjoy your life.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

SO : Positive is that you can always spend your creative time. I can't think of any negatives.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

SO : Positive thinking, inquisitiveness.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

SO : A fresh and pure spirit.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

SO : Personal computer, drawing paper, pen.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

SO : Decide what you need to achieve on a daily basis and check my progress on a daily basis.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

SO : It depends on the property.

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

SO : It depends on the property. Some are for a few days, and some are for a few months to a year.

DI: What was your most important job experience?

SO : There is no best. All are important.

DI: Who are some of your clients?

SO : There are various types such as corporations and individuals.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

SO : It changes from time to time. I used to love Jean Nouvel for a long time.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

SO : We want to hire a lot of staff to make it a bigger company and provide everyone with a designed life. I would like to start selling homes with packaged designs.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

SO : I create my own design.

DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

SO : I have something to talk about, but I'll tell you by nominating here when it's done.

DI: How can people contact you?

SO : The first is inquiries from the homepage. Another is an introduction from an acquaintance.
