Designer Interview of Maja Zińczuk:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

MZ : I’m not always want to be a designer. But I studied in school where there was a lot of great designers like architecture, graphics, furniture designers and so on. Atmosphere of this school inspired me to looked close on that field.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

MZ : Right now I don’t have any specific brand or company. I work as photographer and filmmaker in gallery of art in my city and sometimes as a freelancer.

DI: What is "design" for you?

MZ : I associate design with good quality, with transparency and with the thing I like most - a thought, an idea, a surprise expressed in the form of one thought.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

MZ : Photography, nature oriented films and social advertising.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

MZ : Interior of the Polin Museum in Warsaw (Poland).Why? Everyone should visit this place and see for themselves :)

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

MZ : Every day I work in gallery of art in Poland. Me and my colleagues prepare exhibitions for artists. From promotion to interior design.

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

MZ : Usually I work with digital images and postproduction.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

MZ : It comes to my on different times of days but I feel most creative when I listened to good music.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

MZ : I try to think of as many aspects I can.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

MZ : I think when I make the final touches.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

MZ : When I work with creative things, I feel absolutely fantastic.

DI: What makes a design successful?

MZ : A very well-thought-out idea and finishing of the project.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

MZ : Has my concept been implemented? Is there any sense or deeper thought in all this?

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

MZ : To include social or ecological thought in all this. Design must serve society.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

MZ : Emphasis on the ecological aspects of what we do.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

MZ : My last exhibition was in Poland, in the place where I work now, i.e. in the Gallery of Sleńdziński family in Białystok. The exhibition took place in 2018, and I would like to have the next one maybe even in New York.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

MZ : Good photos and films, music and reading books. Sometimes playing sports or dancing. Everything can be an inspiration.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

MZ : I try to photograph/film in my own style. I want to give as much of myself as possible in this.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

MZ : I live in a fairly small town in eastern Poland. Local folk culture, with its traditions, holidays and music, is very important to me. I don't live in the capital of the country, I'm far from big advertising agencies and that's a minus, but I have to be more creative and that's a plus.

DI: How do you work with companies?

MZ : For now, I don't cooperate with companies.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

MZ : They should pick out unique people.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

MZ : My process is similar to the one in which I create all things. Focus and a good idea are useful.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

MZ : I try to have functional things at home, but also things that will give the apartment charm and coziness.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

MZ : I start the day with good coffee. Then I prepare my son for school. Then I can start working ;)

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

MZ : Don't stop pursuing your goal, don't give up. Believe in your abilities.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

MZ : As in any profession, there are positives and negatives, but they are probably different for everyone. It is difficult to answer this question.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

MZ : I will probably repeat this very often, but it is an element of surprise in a well-thought-out strategy.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

MZ : Getting the point out of complicated things :)

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

MZ : I use Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom to edit photos and Adobe Premiere to edit videos. I am inspired by websites and podcasts about cinematographers, as well as interviews and books about photographers and designers.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

MZ : You need to be very well organized in life and in your work. This is the key to success ;)

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

MZ : It depends on the project in question, what it is, how long the project takes and how complex it is.

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

MZ : I get a lot of questions about various things, and I always try to answer them factually.

DI: What was your most important job experience?

MZ : It was when I worked in television as a camera operator.

DI: Who are some of your clients?

MZ : First of all, these are artists who exhibit their works in our Art Gallery.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

MZ : I like working with photography and film the most.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

MZ : I would like to take part in a master cinematographer training.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

MZ : I usually work in a team.

DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

MZ : We are preparing to arrange an exhibition that is very important for our Gallery, from interior design to the marketing side.
