Designer Interview of Yaser and Yasin Rashid Shomali:

DI: Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?

YAYRS : Our architect design studio was founded by a team of experienced architects and designers who share a passion for innovative and functional design. We have worked on a wide range of projects, including commercial, residential, and public buildings, and have developed a reputation for delivering high-quality results that meet the needs and expectations of our clients.

DI: Can you tell us more about your company / design studio?

YAYRS : Shomali Design Studio specializes in providing architectural design services to clients. We offer a range of services, including initial concept development, construction documentation, project management, and 3D modeling. Our team of architects and designers work closely with clients to understand their goals and requirements, and to create customized design solutions that meet their specific needs.

DI: What is "design" for you?

YAYRS : Design, for us, is the process of creating functional and aesthetically pleasing buildings and structures that meet the needs of our clients and the communities they serve. We believe that good design should be innovative, sustainable, and accessible to all.

DI: What kinds of works do you like designing most?

YAYRS : As an architect design studio, we enjoy designing a wide range of buildings and structures, from small residential properties to large commercial developments. We are particularly passionate about designing buildings that blend modern design with traditional architectural elements, creating unique and functional spaces that are both innovative and timeless.

DI: What is your most favorite design, could you please tell more about it?

YAYRS : We are proud of many of the designs we have created over the years, but one of our most favorite designs is the Kujdane Building, a residential development that we designed for a client in the heart of the jungle. The building incorporates cutting-edge design elements, such as a slopping roof and a sky glass windows, while also incorporating traditional architectural features that reflect the history and character of the neighborhood. We were pleased to receive positive feedback from both our client and the community, and are proud to have contributed to the ongoing development of the city.

DI: What was the first thing you designed for a company?

YAYRS : The first thing we designed for a company was a small residential house for a local client

DI: What is your favorite material / platform / technology?

YAYRS : As an architect design studio, We use a variety of materials, such as concrete, steel, wood, and glass, depending on the specific needs of each project. We also use a range of software and tools, such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Revit, to create 3D models and construction documents.

DI: When do you feel the most creative?

YAYRS : We feel the most creative when we are able to collaborate with our team members and clients to explore new design ideas and possibilities. We also find that we are most creative when we are able to work in a relaxed and comfortable environment, free from distractions and interruptions.

DI: Which aspects of a design do you focus more during designing?

YAYRS : When designing a project, we focus on a range of aspects, including functionality, aesthetics, sustainability, and accessibility. We believe that a good design should be both beautiful and practical, and should meet the needs of the users and the community it serves. We also pay close attention to the details, such as materials, lighting, and spatial organization, to ensure that every aspect of the design is carefully considered and executed.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when you design?

YAYRS : Designers may experience a range of emotions when they design, such as excitement, frustration, satisfaction, and pride. Designing can be a challenging and rewarding process that requires both creativity and problem-solving skills.

DI: What kind of emotions do you feel when your designs are realized?

YAYRS : When our designs are realized, we feel a sense of satisfaction and pride in having contributed to the built environment. We also feel a sense of responsibility to ensure that the design is executed correctly and meets the expectations of our clients and the community.

DI: What makes a design successful?

YAYRS : A design is successful when it meets the needs and expectations of the users and the community it serves, while also being innovative, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing. A successful design should also be executed correctly and within budget.

DI: When judging a design as good or bad, which aspects do you consider first?

YAYRS : When judging a design as good or bad, we consider aspects such as functionality, aesthetics, sustainability, and accessibility. We also consider the context of the design, such as the location and cultural and social factors.

DI: From your point of view, what are the responsibilities of a designer for society and environment?

YAYRS : As designers, we have a responsibility to create designs that are sustainable, accessible, and socially responsible. We believe that good design should contribute to the well-being of the community and the environment, and should be mindful of the impact it has on both.

DI: How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?

YAYRS : The design field is constantly evolving, with new technologies and trends emerging all the time. We believe that the future of design will be characterized by greater integration of technology and sustainability, as well as a focus on creating designs that are more responsive to the needs of the community and the environment.

DI: When was your last exhibition and where was it? And when do you want to hold your next exhibition?

YAYRS : We participated in a design award exhibition ceremony at Como Lake, Italy in July 2022, where we were awarded two silver design awards. We are preparing for our next exhibition, which will take place at Como Lake, Italy in July 2023. Our designs have been nominated for one gold and one silver design award.

DI: Where does the design inspiration for your works come from? How do you feed your creativity? What are your sources of inspirations?

YAYRS : Our design inspiration comes from a variety of sources, including nature, art, culture, and technology. We feed our creativity by staying up-to-date with the latest design trends and technologies, and by engaging in a continuous process of research and experimentation.

DI: How would you describe your design style? What made you explore more this style and what are the main characteristics of your style? What's your approach to design?

YAYRS : Our design style is characterized by a blend of modern and traditional elements, creating unique and functional spaces that are both innovative and timeless. We approach design by considering the needs and desires of the users and the community, as well as the constraints of the project.

DI: Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?

YAYRS : Shomali Design Studio based on Tehran, Iran. Cultural heritage can definitely influence a designer's approach to design, as it reflects the values, beliefs, and traditions of a particular community or society. The pros of designing in a culturally rich environment include greater opportunities for creativity and innovation, while the cons may include the need to navigate complex regulations and social expectations.

DI: How do you work with companies?

YAYRS : We work with companies by first understanding their needs and goals, and then developing customized design solutions that meet those needs. We believe in open communication and collaboration throughout the entire design process.

DI: What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?

YAYRS : Our suggestion to companies for working with a designer is to choose a designer who has a track record of delivering high-quality results and who is able to work collaboratively with clients. Companies can select a good designer by reviewing their portfolio, client testimonials, and experience.

DI: Can you talk a little about your design process?

YAYRS : Our design process typically involves several stages, including initial concept development, sketching and 3D modeling, construction documentation, and project management. We work collaboratively with clients and team members throughout the entire process to ensure that the final design meets all needs and expectations.

DI: What are 5 of your favorite design items at home?

YAYRS : Our favorite design items at home include a vintage Eames lounge chair, a modernist floor lamp, a mid-century credenza, a handmade rug, and a contemporary art piece.

DI: Can you describe a day in your life?

YAYRS : An architect designer typically spends their day planning, attending meetings, designing, researching, collaborating with team members, visiting project sites, and managing administrative tasks.

DI: Could you please share some pearls of wisdom for young designers? What are your suggestions to young, up and coming designers?

YAYRS : Our suggestion to young designers is to never stop learning and experimenting, to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies, and to develop a unique design style and approach that reflects their individual interests and skills.

DI: From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?

YAYRS : The positives of being a designer include the ability to create something new and innovative, to contribute to the built environment and the community, and to work collaboratively with clients and team members. The negatives include the pressure to deliver high-quality results within budget and time constraints, and the need to constantly stay up-to-date with the latest design trends and technologies.

DI: What is your "golden rule" in design?

YAYRS : Our "golden rule" in design is to always put the needs and desires of the users and the community first, and to create designs that are both beautiful and practical.

DI: What skills are most important for a designer?

YAYRS : The most important skills for a designer include creativity, problem-solving abilities, communication skills, technical skills, and project management skills.

DI: Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?

YAYRS : We use a range of tools during design, including software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Revit, as well as physical tools such as sketchbooks, pencils, and rulers. Our sources of inspiration include nature, art, architecture, and technology, as well as our clients and the community.

DI: Designing can sometimes be a really time consuming task, how do you manage your time?

YAYRS : We manage our time by setting clear goals and deadlines, prioritizing tasks, and communicating regularly with clients and team members. We also make use of project management software to track progress and manage timelines.

DI: How long does it take to design an object from beginning to end?

YAYRS : The time it takes to design an object can vary greatly depending on the scope and complexity of the project. Some projects may take weeks or months to complete, while others may take years.

DI: What is the most frequently asked question to you, as a designer?

YAYRS : The most frequently asked question we receive as designers is "How much will it cost?" as clients are understandably concerned about budget and costs.

DI: What was your most important job experience?

YAYRS : Our most important job experience has been building a successful design studio that delivers high-quality results and meets the needs and expectations of our clients.

DI: Who are some of your clients?

YAYRS : Some of our clients include private individuals and businesses.

DI: What type of design work do you enjoy the most and why?

YAYRS : We enjoy designing a wide range of projects, from small residential properties to large commercial developments, as each project presents its own unique challenges and opportunities for creativity.

DI: What are your future plans? What is next for you?

YAYRS : Our future plans include continuing to grow and expand our design studio, while also focusing on developing sustainable and innovative design solutions that meet the needs of our clients and the community.

DI: Do you work as a team, or do you develop your designs yourself?

YAYRS : We work as a team, collaborating closely with our clients and other team members to develop customized design solutions that meet the specific needs of each project.

DI: Do you have any works-in-progress being designed that you would like to talk about?

YAYRS : We have several works-in-progress that we are currently designing, including a large villas and a residential renovation project.
